Chapter 18

“Ivy.” Boone steadied himself with a hand on her shoulder. “What did Casey tell you?”

Ivy sighed and wrapped her hand around Boone’s wrist—well, as best she could.

“Wow,” Ivy said, brows raised. “You’ve really filled out since high school.” She gently removed his hand so she could take a step back, cross her arms, and look him up and down. “Like really. But if we’re going to have a conversation, you need to put some clothes on. I’ll…uh…just make us some coffee while you”—she waved a finger in the air—“while you do whatever it is you need to do to cover yourself up. Unless you need help?”

“No,” Boone countered, more quickly than he should have. Because the truth was, he had no idea how he’d gotten undressed, which meant he wasn’t entirely sure how to reverse the process. But the thought of Casey’s best friend helping him figure it out just felt weird and wrong, especially when she was most likely here to accuse him of doing something wrong. Story of his life. “I’ll just…um…go in here,” he sputtered, grabbing his jeans from where they lay over a chair and a clean T-shirt from his dresser drawer. Then he slipped back into the bathroom, kicking the door shut behind him.

He wasn’t much better off when he reemerged. His jeans were on but unbuttoned. And he’d gotten his head and his good arm through the T-shirt, but the one in the sling was still strapped to his body beneath the shirt.

Ivy stifled a chuckle when she saw him, and Boone shook his head and huffed out a breath. “It’s fine,” he said. “You can laugh.”

Ivy blew out a breath and regained her composure. “No. No. I’m not going to laugh at an injured man, not before I know what made my best friend skip town for the day and if he had anything to do with it.” She took a tentative step toward him, then nodded toward his groin. “Um…may I?”

Boone glanced down at his open fly and unbuttoned jeans. Unless he wanted to spend Thanksgiving in his guest room, by himself, he was going to need someone to dress him the rest of the way.

“Yes,” he groaned. “Man, I do not like feeling helpless.”

Ivy did let herself laugh this time. “Sounds a lot like someone else I know.” Then she set her gaze on his. “Look away,” she said firmly. “Don’t make this weird.”

Boone laughed and did as he was told. “So are you going to tell me where Casey is and why you think it’s my fault?” He tried to sound clueless, but Ivy gave him a knowing glance.

“She told me to come over here and make sure you were okay and that you weren’t going to be stuck in your tiny little briefs all day. I gotta say, Boone Murphy, I did not peg you for such an old-fashioned guy.”

He rolled his eyes. “They’re…um…supportive. Especially on my bike.”

Ivy snorted. “I’m sorry.” She snorted again. “Okay, no, I’m not.”

He
