THE LOVE BOMB

Have you ever heard people applaud in a support group? I have. Tara shared her story—a story of what love looks like to a grieving person.

Tara’s second baby, born with anomalies incompatible with life outside the womb, had just died. Friends of Tara and her husband, Jeremiah, decided to make a surprise visit to comfort them. The friends scrounged up the money and took a flight from far away. Once they arrived at their home, they sat in the rental car for a moment, conflicted. “We thought to ourselves, ‘What if they don’t want to see us? What if they are too hurt to even want to talk with us right now? We didn’t even tell them we were coming. Well, at least they will know we cared enough to come and give them a hug. That’s okay, if that’s all we do. We hope to at least just tell them at the door in person that we love you, we are hurting with you, we love your babies, and we just wanted to give you a hug. That will be okay with us if they need their space and don’t want to spend time with us.’”

Tara said when they opened the door they were blown away. It was like getting a “love bomb.” That very act meant the world to her and her husband. They had a healing time together with their friends. She took that experience to heart and now feels strongly that simply being present and available is so important. Now she and her husband try to do the same for others around them who are hurting.
