Chapter Five: No Fun

“W hy didn’t they just take the whole beehive?” Sam asked. “Then, they could have more candy!”

“The pioneers knew that the bees needed to have food for the winter. If they took too much honey, the bees would starve.” Mrs. Morris looked sad for a moment.

“Wait a second,” Danny said. “Do you mean that the only candy they got was if they happened to find a beehive, and even if they found a beehive, the kids had to do the work and they didn’t get to eat as much as they wanted?”

Mrs. Morris nodded.

“How often did they get to have honeycomb?” Danny quickly asked.

Mrs. Morris answered, “A few times each year.”

The whole class looked sad. They looked down at their desks. They looked up at the board. They looked over at their friends.

In a quiet voice, Sam asked, “Pioneer kids only got to eat candy a few times each year? I eat candy all the time.”
