LEFT REFORM PARTY (VENSTREREFORMPARTI)

This was a group in the parliamentary Liberal Party (Venstre) formed in 1895 to oppose the agreement by moderate Liberals under Frede Bojsen with the Conservative government. Its chairman was Sofus Hogsbro, but its true leader was J. C. Christensen. In the election of 1898 it won 63 seats and became the largest party in the Folketing. Three years later it increased its representation to 76 and formed a government marking the Change of System. In 1910 it united with the Moderate Left to form the United Left. In this context, “left” means opposed to the conservative Right.
