Chapter Six

A week later, there still were no breaks in the case. Simon was seriously getting tired of the watered down drinks. What was really pissing him off, though, were the men staring, leering, and making comments about Megan while she danced. He had to constantly remind himself not to beat the shit out of them.

Not only because of the bouncers, but also because he couldn’t get himself banned and still help Megan. So he forced himself to sit idly by and watch. It was a good thing too.

Exactly nine nights after he started coming to the club with Megan, the mayor popped in, and he didn’t look like he should have been standing let alone roaming around Massey. The guy was drunk. Seriously and completely drunk.

Simon could actually smell the fumes pouring off him from over ten feet away, which in a place that served a lot of alcohol definitely said something. The man came in weaving, and yet looked damn happy.

“We did it,” the mayor said to the owner of the club. “The buyer’s damn happy, and I think I’ve found a way to get rid of my annoyance. The buyer’s even happier because of the bonus I’ll be giving him.”

The owner grabbed him by the arm and tugged him into the back, but Simon had heard enough, more than enough truthfully. Digging out his phone, he placed a call to Brant. “It’s me,” he said quietly. Moving to a corner, he ensured he was alone. “The mayor’s here, and from the sounds of things, he’s got another group of women heading out soon. He’s met with the buyer, and the deal is set. It also sounds like he may have a plan to get at Elizabeth.”

“Shit. All right, I’ll have my guys move in closer on their watch of her. Where’s Megan?”

“She’s hitting the stage for her last number of the night.”

“So you haven’t told her yet?”

“I quite literally just heard the conversation, and then immediately called you. She’s backstage, I’d have never gotten near her. I’ll tell her as soon as she’s off, though. The bouncer and the owner let me go and meet her by the girls’ room door. They’ve gotten rather used to me being here.” Unfortunately.

“If you hear anything else, you call right away,” Brant said. “I’ll update you as soon as I hear anything from my end.”

“You got it,” Simon said. Hanging up, he tucked the phone away, then went back to his stool at the bar. Turning to face the stage when Megan was introduced, he contemplated the fact they’d never set up a signal for if he’d found out information. A little late to realize that, of course.

Sighing, he rubbed a hand over his face, looked to the hall, and decided to go see if he could hear something more. It was a risk, but the office was on the other side of the guys’ bathroom wall, so he might get lucky. Pushing off the stool, he headed for the can.
