Chapter Fourteen

***

Leah pushed the hospital doors open and stepped out. Only then, did she drop the calm expression and allow a grin to split her face. She was almost a hundred percent sure that she had gotten the job.

She went to the parking lot, unlocked her car and threw her folder in the back seat. Instead of entering the car she leaned against the side and allowed the sun to warm her up. Gratitude welled up in her chest.

Despite knowing that Matt would be fine because his dad was now in his life, it was important for Leah to have a job. She loved her work. It grounded her and gave her a sense of purpose. She owed it to Adrian for using his family name to get her an interview.

She remembered how she had marched into the conference room of Candin Inc and groaned. She had overreacted and worse she had done it in front of his family. Adrian had just been trying to help.

The previous evening, he had come to the cottage briefly, played with Matt, all the while making sure not to meet her gaze.

They couldn’t continue that way. She had to apologize. Leah leaned into the car and grabbed her cell phone from her handbag. She held it tightly against her ear as it rung.

“Hi.” Adrian’s deep voice came over the phone.

A sliver of excitement slithered through her at the sound of his voice. She was beginning to accept that her attraction for Adrian was something that would never end. It was one of those things that a person learned to live with.

“Hi,” Leah said a little breathlessly. She cleared her throat. “I called to say thank you. They haven’t made it official but I’m pretty sure I got the job.”

“Congratulations,” Adrian said. “I may have put in a good word but ultimately, your qualifications are what mattered.”

A lump formed in her throat. “Thank you.”

“Let’s go celebrate,” Adrian said.

Leah laughed. “I haven’t officially gotten the job.”

“You will,” Arian said and proceeded to give her directions to a restaurant downtown.

“See you soon,” Leah said and slipped into the car.

She turned the key and the engine croaked like a person with a bad cough. “Please jalopy, don’t do this. I’m really hungry.”

She tried again. This time it didn’t even bother with the cough-like sounds. It choked once and went silent. She gripped the steering wheel and looked ahead. Grabbing her phone, she called Adrian again.

“Do you mind picking me up?” Leah said. “Maisie’s car won’t start. I’m at the hospital parking lot.”

“I’ll be there in ten,” Adrian said and disconnected the call.

He was there in seven minutes. Leah grabbed her things from the car.

“Thanks,” she said to Adrian as he leaned across the front seats to open the passenger door for her.

“You’re welcome,” he said. “I’ve called someone. They’ll come and pick it up in a short while.”

“Thanks,” Leah said. It felt good to have someone else take care of her problems for a change. She could get used to it.
