Chapter Fifteen

Mika blew out a deep breath. “Why do you need to know?”

“Because Jen said you’re in remission, which to me means cancer.”

She shook her head. “Not cancer.”

His eyes snapped closed with what looked like relief, then with frustration. “Everyone knows. Except me.”

“Can we talk about something else and stop making a big deal over this. Believe me, I do that enough myself.”

His gaze strayed to the next table with an older couple enjoying their meal. “It is a big deal. I told you something about myself that only a handful of people know outside of my clients. The reason I don’t tell people is because I don’t want to be judged. Friends don’t judge.”

She rolled her eyes, hating that he’d made his point so well. Mika figured eventually Cain and Jen would end up in bed together. Did it really matter that he knew her condition? “I have an autoimmune disease. I was born with it.” Her lips parted, and then she paused, gathering her thoughts. “Right now it’s in remission, or I should say suppression, but when it comes back—” Her gaze flew to his. “It’s a severe case, and that’s why I take the injections.”

“Okay, what happens when you’re not in remission?”

She toyed with the ice in her glass. If Cain was really her friend, he’d eventually treat her with the same polite indifference as the rest of her buddies. He’d pretend not to see the lesions or the scars, and she’d love him for the lie.

“I take cover one way or the other.”

“Why?” He moved the glass away from her absent ministrations and his thumbs brushed her knuckles.

“Because it’s ugly. Can we talk about something else now?”

“Maybe you’ll be in remission for a long time.”

She shook her head. “Sometimes, but not often and not someone like me.”

His brow furrowed. “Will you tell me what it is?”

He stared so poignantly at her, she stopped breathing. “Turns me into someone no one would want to touch. At least, that’s what I thought until tonight.” She picked up her fork and poked it into the red pepper the waiter delivered. She paused. “You’re lucky, you know. People like you and that blonde in the bar can walk freely, never having to deal with looks of disgust from people. You can stand confidently in front of a mirror and see perfection looking back.”

“Nobody is perfect, Mika. Nobody.” He gripped her wrist. “Believe me, Ben wanted you.”

“No one wants a monster.”

“Stop calling yourself that,” he said harshly. “Whatever it is, I can see it’s a challenge for you, but I also see the strength in you.”

Mika used her knife to push the pepper off her fork. She stared down at it. “When it’s bad, you either find the strength to ignore it or kill yourself, and many have.”

Without directly voicing the worst moments of her life, she just admitted she’d contemplated ending her life. She’d never admitted that to anyone.

When she was seventeen, and a flare had covered seventy percent of
