“It’s a phone. It’s not going to attack me. So you can back off.” Eve frowned as the mobile jingled in her hand and her mate eyed it with suspicion. She accepted the call and lifted it to her ear as she strolled from the room. Any reason to escape her mate was a good thing in her book.

“Hey, Eve. I’m at your place, where are you?” Karl growled down the line and her heart skipped a beat. Karl was one of her oldest friends and right now she could do with one of his specialities… A hug. Not just any hug, but a big old bear hug from a big old bear shifter.

“In hell.” Eve rolled her eyes and ran a hand through her hair. She’d landed herself in a mess this time and even one of Karl’s hugs couldn’t make things feel right.

“Wow, great connection. Do they have internet there too?” Karl teased. Karl was the big brother she’d never had but always wanted.

“All modern conveniences, but no escape route.” Eve offered with a sigh.

“What’s up?” Karl knew Eve and instinctively knew when something was wrong.

“Oh, you know. Out of the frying pan and into the fire. Rented a place to get away from roaches and ended up in the middle of a wolf pack.”

“A wolf pack.” He growled. “They giving you a hard time?”

“Something like that.” Eve said absently as she spotted Kris take a stroll past the kitchen door and make out like he wasn’t watching her like a damn hawk. She sighed because her body apparently liked the fact that the man looked like sin.

“You want me to knock a few heads together?” Karl demanded.

“You know I can take care of myself.” She sighed again. If only that was the answer to her problems.

“How long you away?”

“The rest of my very short life.” Eve grumbled as Kris made another pass by. It was telling to her that she couldn’t even use the phone without the man eavesdropping. What would life be as his mate?
