Nick yawned and shivered as he set his thermal coffee mug on a shelf in the barnâs equipment room. He grabbed two pitchforks and brought them to the stall. Rusty and Rose nickered in unison and hung their massive heads over the gate. âGood morning, you two. Do you think our guest is going to show up for mucking duty?â
The Belgians snuffled at his coat pockets and nudged him. He leaned the pitchforks against the wall and reached into his pockets. âYeah, I brought you something.â He pulled out the carrots heâd stashed and held them out, one on each gloved palm. The two draft horses chomped on the treats. âI donât think so either.â
âYou donât think so either? About what?â
Melodyâs voice triggered a jolt straight to his heart. âI was just telling Rusty and Rose I didnât think youâd show up this morning.â He turned to face her, and the very sight of her caused his heart to skip a beat. She had a sleepy look about her, and he wanted to take her back to bed and snuggle under the covers with her for a few hours. To be honest, he wanted way more than a snuggle.
âHuh.â She came closer and stroked Roseâs forehead. âIf thatâs what you thought, then you donât know me at all.â
âIâd like to get to know you better.â He put his arm around her and brushed his lips across her forehead. âHow about you? Would you like to get to know me better?â
âMaybe.â Melody went up on her tiptoes and kissed him briefly.
âMaybe? Well, let me see if I can help you make up your mind.â He drew her closer and kissed her deeply.
âMmm.â
He could feel her smile against his mouth, and he pulled back to peer at her. âMmm?â
âYou taste like coffee.â
He cocked an eyebrow. âIsnât that a bad thing?â
âNot at all. I love coffee.â
Love. That word falling from her mouth stirred his imagination. In less than two months sheâd be back in the spotlight. He was willing to do his damnedest to keep things going between them. Heâd made up his mind, but what if she left him high and dry?
Doused with a bucketful of cold reality, he let her go and averted his gaze. âTime to put the horses outside in the paddock.â
âWhat do you want me to do?â
âYou can fill the hay racks in their stall. Iâll get the wheelbarrow and lead lines.â He canted his head toward a couple of hay bales stacked against the wall on a wooden pallet. âThe knife to cut the twine is hanging on the wall there.â
âGot it.â Melody strode over to the hay.
How far did the pendulum of grief swing when it came to his perceptions? Had she been teasing when sheâd said maybe she wanted to get to know him better? Maybe she saw him only as someone to toy with during her brief stay. And what about the trust issue?
One minute he was certain Melody had good reasons for hiding her identity, and the next his defenses kicked in.
