Griffin noticed Noah had left with that waiter, Ray, and that frustrated him. He had told Noah he didn’t trust the guy. How he had even gotten in was a mystery. There were supposed to have been guards against that kind of thing. Clearly Ray was determined to get to Noah. Now he had to go and make sure Noah didn’t get kidnapped or something. Not that he minded in the least. Well, he minded that Noah got kidnapped. But having to go rescue him and get away from all this… this… insincerity would be welcome.

He had been stuck doing the small-talk thing with a couple of wealthy business owners. His mother seemed to think he was good at it, all the schmoozing. However, it was a part of the charity process he really despised. He didn’t know these people and they certainly didn’t know him. Oh, they knew of him. He was, after all, a Colewater, and they relished being the center of attention of one of them, even the young one. It was the reason they were here. Sure, they would donate. Most of them would contribute generously. But there was a give and take to the dance. Having a Colewater standing next to them while there were paparazzi in the room was great for not only their egos but for their businesses, and they would only give up the cash for this charity when that requirement was met. And because Griffin was distracted with all the fake laughs and chitchat, he had nearly missed Ray entering the picture and whisking Noah away.

To be fair, it wasn’t the only reason he didn’t have eyes on Noah. He was a little bit pissed at him for the whole Jennifer thing. At first, he was a lot pissed. Fuck. Shivers still rocketed through him at the mention of her name. He felt so incredibly betrayed by his best friend in the world, like the old preverbal rug had been yanked so damn hard from underneath him he was still trying to get up off the floor. But as the evening wore on, he realized that once again Noah had been right. He had begged Griffin to get professional help with what had happened. That it was not a sign of weakness, but of strength, to admit he needed to deal with it. He had let that bitch in, let her get to him, drug his drink. He felt deceived, violated, and for the first time, he identified as vulnerable. Like he wasn’t in control and that somehow his mother was right as well about the many relationships he rushed through. Yeah. There was something about that too. All the girlfriends. As if he were running from something.

Marriage. Yeah. That was it. He was running from marriage. Well―maybe growing up too. He supposed there were a few questions a professional could help him answer.

Except the big question right now was where was Ray taking Noah?

He excused himself and rushed toward the doors leading out.
