Twenty-Five

DEACON

The sun woke me up far earlier than I intended, but I had forgotten to close the curtains, so I was being blinded by the sun. Looking to my right, I was met with an empty bed, with the covers still perfect, as if nobody had slept beside me last night.

Where had Evie slept? Sitting up, I saw a lump on the floor. The lump had beautiful brown hair, curly from letting it dry naturally after our swim. I got out of bed and walked to where she was sleeping.

“Why are you on the floor?” I asked quietly. Her eyelashes fluttered while she pretended to be asleep. She was a stubborn one. Moving closer to her ear, I asked her again, “Why are you on the floor?” Again, no movement from my wife. This was ridiculous. She was being a child. Standing, I cleared my throat. “Evie, get off the floor, now,” I said through gritted teeth. I wanted to yell, but I also didn’t want to make my entire family run in here to see what was wrong.

Evie rolled over onto her back and stared up at me. “What’s your problem?” she asked, her words dripping with attitude.

“My problem is, my wife is sleeping on the floor. What the fuck are you doing?” I crossed my arms and waited for her answer.

“Well, after our interaction in the pool last night, I figured my lying beside you would repulse you, so I decided not to go through that humiliation again.” She sat up, crossed her legs, and stared at me. I crouching down so we were at eye level. I couldn’t help but laugh. She was having a temper tantrum.

“Maybe next time you decide to have a hissy fit, you would do well to remember you told me no. I will never force a woman to change her mind, and that includes you.”

Evie’s mouth fell open. I stood and walked away from her. Nothing I said was a lie. Never in my life had I pushed a woman to have sex with me. I had bedded more women than I cared to admit, but they were all consensual.

When I got out of the shower, Evie wasn’t in the room. The smell of breakfast cooking wafted up the stairs. Bacon, maybe pancakes, and coffee.

That meant Mom was cooking breakfast. I didn’t have my chef come for breakfast since he stayed to make supper and I usually only had a cup of coffee as I ran out the door. Dressing for the day, I was going to the office once my family left in a few hours. I had ignored the distillery for the better part of the week, and I shuddered thinking how much I needed to do.

The opportunity in Louisiana weighed on my mind. I needed to get there. Rather we needed to get there. As much as I would like to ignore Evie as punishment for her behavior, I needed her.

“Well, good morning, sleepyhead,” my mother crooned as I walked into the giant kitchen.
