“Ten thousand dollars? Are you shitting me?” Ciara’s voice echoes throughout the almost empty diner. The four students sitting at the bar with their laptops open all turn to look at her. She smiles sheepishly and leans in. “How did you land a summer job that pays ten thousand dollars? I’ve got a job lined up in Cambridge for the summer that only pays half that.”

“The captain offered. I accepted.”

“This wouldn’t have anything to do with your little arrangement with Jake-ee-poo, would it?” Mel smiles way too knowingly, giving me away. I should have never told her what happened Sunday night.

“Jake-ee-poo?” both Shannon and Ciara sing.

I roll my eyes and hang my head. Busted. Damn Mel and that non-existent filter between her brain and mouth.

“You’re getting paid to sleep with him?” Ciara asks. “Kayla, that’s prostitution. That shit may fly in Nevada, but it’s not legal here in Washington.”

“And you aren’t paying Jake to grant me these three wishes?” I counter. All three girls avert their attention. “I figured as much. What’s the deal? He wouldn’t agree to anything like this unless there’s something in it for him.”

When none of them will look at me, I grab Mel’s hand, drawing her attention to me. “I can’t say,” she practically cries. “Shannon and Ciara threatened me to secrecy. If I say anything they’ll disown me.” She leans toward me. “They scare me.”

We all laugh and nod.

“You guys suck,” I declare lightly. I love them and always will. But right now, I’m not really liking any of them.

“Oh, I know what we should talk about. Tell them about you’re first night in the new place,” Mel says. “That’s way more interesting than the rest of this bullshit anyway.”

Shannon whips her attention to me. “What happened Sunday night? Did you bang Jake? Have you banged him every day since? Why am I the last to find out?”

I hide my smile. Five days. Five amazing daily doses of orgasms delivered by the hottest guy at BU. He’s unpredictable and I’m shocked at how much I love his spontaneity. It’s breaking one of my biggest rules and I’m okay with that.

I’m on my break and the girls all came in for an early lunch before going their separate ways for their Friday adventures. Working at the diner has its perks. Not only do I get to see my friends when I’m working, but I also hear all the gossip. I know way more about who’s sleeping with whom at BU than I’ve ever wanted to know. If only the tips didn’t suck.

Ciara perks up and leans in so far over the table her hair is in her water. “I don’t know what happened, either. So, Kayla, are you going to tell us? Or is this for Mel’s ears only?”

Shannon pulls Ciara’s hair out and wraps a napkin around it to soak up the liquid as I start in on what I already told Mel over texting. “I had to tell someone.”

“And?” Ciara and Shannon say in unison.
