Chapter Four

Camille

I fight back tears while driving to the office.

I really thought Hugo and I had moved on from the past and was starting over. But there’s no place to start—if we don’t have trust to begin with, we’re just going down a dead-end road.

I pull into my regular parking space. Tears stream down my face. Hugo seemed so cold after he read whatever texts he saw. He’d seemed resolute in his opinion of me: someone not to be trusted. It didn’t make any sense standing there arguing with him. I just had to get my point across before I left.

I bend over the steering wheel, crying. I shake my head, feeling stupid for being so worked up by him. The truth is that I don’t want us to be over. I open my purse for some Kleenex and blow my nose. Maybe I should’ve explained the situation between Teron and me to Hugo.

I’ve never really talked about my ex-boyfriend, knowing that Hugo had a chip on his shoulder about the whole ordeal.

I close my eyes, the salt in my tears beginning to sting.

Why should I be the one crying when Hugo shouldn’t have gone into my phone in the first place?
