Chapter 6
Rachel and Dorothy after the services was over, pulled the undertaker and the preacher aside and had a quick conversation that lasted no more than a couple of minutes. This made Hightower think that there was something going on, but he figured Rachel would tell him sooner or later, so heâd just let things slide. When they came back to the buckboard the undertaker and the preacher escorted them, and the last thing the preacher said to the two girls was, âIâll be out to the ranch, either late this evening, or first thing in the morning, it thatâs okay.â
Rachel just shook her head yes and said, âwhenever you can will be from fine with us.â All the way back to the ranch. There was very few words that were spoken. All, Rachel said was, âif you donât mind Edward, just let the ponies walk, I feel like watching nature for a little while.â
Dorothy was setting on the back of the buckboard with Mason at her side. Andrews and Lewis were bringing up of the rear and leading Masonâs horse. Dorothy kept talking to Mason, but her voice was so low that Hightower could not hear a single word she was saying, and all Mason was doing was shaking his head yes.
It took a little over an hour to make it back to the ranch, but Hightower didnât mind it was a nice little drive on a very beautiful day and he was getting to spend some quality time with his wife. When they drove up to the front porch, miss Bitterman had the twins out on the porch on a blanket playing with them, and there was four troopers standing guard, on and around the porch. Miss Bitterman stood up as they came to a stop in front of the porch. Rachel ask her if the kids had been behaveing theirselves, she just smiled and said they were perfect angels. Dorothy had already gotten off the buckboard and walk up on the front porch and sat down with the twins, while Hightower helped Rachel off the buckboard and then said, âIâm going to take the buckboard down to the barn and unhitched the ponies then turn them into the pasture after I brush them down real good.â As he led the ponies off. Rachel hollered at him and said, âdonât be too long Edward, Iâve got something I need to talk to you about.â Hightower just looked back at Rachel and shook his head yes and then continued walking.
It only took Hightower about 20 minutes to unharnessed the ponies and rub them down and on his way back to the house, he was met by the old trooper and he asked, âare you okay son, funerals always did drain all of my energy, especially when itâs the funeral of someone that you care a lot about. If some time youâd like to talk, itâs been said that Iâm a pretty good listener.â âWhen you get off duty old
