Chapter 6

Rachel and Dorothy after the services was over, pulled the undertaker and the preacher aside and had a quick conversation that lasted no more than a couple of minutes. This made Hightower think that there was something going on, but he figured Rachel would tell him sooner or later, so he’d just let things slide. When they came back to the buckboard the undertaker and the preacher escorted them, and the last thing the preacher said to the two girls was, “I’ll be out to the ranch, either late this evening, or first thing in the morning, it that’s okay.”

Rachel just shook her head yes and said, “whenever you can will be from fine with us.” All the way back to the ranch. There was very few words that were spoken. All, Rachel said was, “if you don’t mind Edward, just let the ponies walk, I feel like watching nature for a little while.”

Dorothy was setting on the back of the buckboard with Mason at her side. Andrews and Lewis were bringing up of the rear and leading Mason’s horse. Rachel hollered at him and said, “don’t be too long Edward, I’ve got something I need to talk to you about.” Hightower just looked back at Rachel and shook his head yes and then continued walking.

It only took Hightower about 20 minutes to unharnessed the ponies and rub them down and on his way back to the house, he was met by the old trooper and he asked, “are you okay son, funerals always did drain all of my energy, especially when it’s the funeral of someone that you care a lot about. If some time you’d like to talk, it’s been said that I’m a pretty good listener.” “When you get off duty old
