‘They may be knockin’ on in years but they know how to enjoy ‘emselves alright!’ admitted McFinn. ‘Puttin’ the booze away too. Most wouldn’t be able to find their own rooms if they wanted to. Mr. Haddock’s sent me to bring up more Moët.’

‘Never mind champagne. I’d settle for a nice cup of Ovaltine and me ‘ead on the pillow,’ said Gladys.

‘Too right,’ agreed Bessie, running her finger around the edge of the trifle bowl before lowering it into the sink.

‘I know whose pillow I’d like to get my ‘ead on,’ grinned McFinn. ‘Ooh la la an’ all that. Bet she’s got a few tricks up ‘er sleeve.’

‘All flash! Silver Fox fur an’ no knickers!’ sniffed Gladys.

‘It’s been a goodly time coming,’ said Mrs. Beesby. ‘Mr. Hamish has been too long wi’out a wife. No man should be left lonely in his bed of a night.’

No one could disagree. As for little Hettie, the scullery maid, she sighed forlornly and continued scrubbing the pans. She’d keep Mr. Hamish’s bed warm anytime he liked, with or without a wedding ring on her finger.
