Chapter Five
“How are things doing at your ranch, Heather? Declan told us that you had an intruder the other night.” Declan’s father, Paul Seltzer, a remarkably good looking gentleman with Declan’s eyes and slowly graying hair asked her. Between the two of Declan’s parents, Paul was a lot nicer to her.
Heather nodded and took a sip of her water. “Someone smashed Declan’s truck window and ran off before the police could catch him. They still don’t know who did it.”
Declan’s mother, Lucille, the image of her daughter, clucked her tongue and shook her head. “That’s quite the run of bad luck your farm has been having, dear. You’re lucky that your clients have put up with that nonsense for as long as they have.”
Heather bristled. “They know that my horses are some of the best and that’s what they get. As for the other incidents, none of those could have been prevented and my clients understand that. But for our own piece of mind, we installed a security system and several cameras. If the man comes back, we’ll catch him.”
“Would you like some wine dear?” Mr. Seltzer held out a bottle over her now empty glass. “It’s a lovely chardonnay.
Heather covered her glass with her hand. “Oh no, I can’t. Doctor’s orders.”
“What?!” Mrs. Seltzer’s face turned a bright shade of red as she choked on a piece of meat. “Declan is that why you’re marrying this woman? You got her pregnant?”
Heather and Declan sputtered simultaneously. He managed to recover first. “Mother! No! Heather got injured the other day and the doctor prescribed her pain pills that can’t be mixed with alcohol. No one is pregnant.”
“It’s true,” Heather earnestly agreed. “I was thrown from a horse. My back and side are covered in bruises.”
The woman harrumphed as she took another sip of her wine, still looking unconvinced. “How are the wedding plans coming along? Are you still insisting on holding the wedding and reception at your ranch?” The woman’s nose wrinkled at the thought.
“Actually, our caterer is sick and just cancelled,” Heather reluctantly admitted, hating the gleam that appeared in her future mother-in-law’s eye. “Now that I’m hurt and can’t do much, our chores are piling up. I’m not sure that I can plan this wedding and run my ranch.” She took a deep breath and stared the woman in the eye. “Lucille, would you mind having it here and figuring the rest of the reception out?”
Mrs. Seltzer pretended to think it over for a minute, dragging the moment out with long sips of wine. “I do know a caterer that owes me a favor, but they’re a classier establishment. I do think that they’ll be more comfortable serving food here than at your place, dear. Yes, I would be happy to plan your reception. I should have everything taken care of by the end of the week. You just worry about your little ranch and taking care of your end of things.”
Heather couldn’t help but feel equal parts relieved and terrified by her acceptance.
