Timmy

I gave Whitty the perfect nickname. He is hilarious and, with the help of a few beers, I nearly forget my troubles. Our chatting, however, falters when we hit on the topic of family.

“So I have four much older siblings and you’re an only child.”

“I guess opposites attract,” he replies.

“You do know I’m gay, right, Whitty?” I wink.

“Opposites can attract in the friend zone too.” He smirks and winks back.

“Good save.”

“Thanks.” His smirk falls when he adds, “My dad’s gay. That’s why he and Mom split up when I was a little kid.”

“Was he a decent father?”

My question seems to catch him off guard. “Um, yeah. He really was.”

“How so?” I ask questions like this just to torture myself.

Whitty is the one who grows visibly uncomfortable, though. “I guess you could say there was nothing he wouldn’t do for me.”

A stab of envy slices into my gut. “Must’ve been nice.”

“I never thought much about it, but it was nice, and it still is.” He shakes his head as if to dislodge the idea of his father from his head. “So, are you seeing anybody?”

Here’s where I get squirrely. “Nobody seriously.”

EJ approaches us, points to the door, and tilts his head in question. “Why do your friends keep on checking to see if you’re ready to leave? Do they think I’m gonna drag you out of here and try to have my way with you?”

I laugh. “If that happened, they’d probably be envious of me.” On second thought, after seeing the way EJ and Landon are behaving—like lovesick schoolboys—maybe not so much. The three of us need to have a come-to-Jesus moment.

Time to change the direction of this chat. “Do you have a girlfriend?”

“Well, there is this girl…Beverly Watson.”

“Not the Beverly who works for food services at Darien Hall.”

“One and the same. Why?”

“I know her from sociology class last year. She seems really cool.” Beverly told off Lance at the bakery counter, which was enough to earn high marks in my book.

“That she is. But she won’t take me seriously because she says I don’t take life seriously. You know, she calls me the rich kid who hasn’t ever had to work for anything in his life.”

“I don’t work during the school year either, but I break my ass all summer. Is that what you mean?”

“Nope.” Sweat pops on his upper lip. “Not me—I spend summers on my jet ski.”

“Now that must really be nice.”

Again, Whitty fidgets in his seat. “Let me grab you another beer.”

“You’ve been buying all night. This one’s on me.” I get up from our table against the back wall where Whitty insisted on dragging me when he first came in, go to the bar for drinks, and when I return, I’m surprised to find Cole sitting across from Whitty in the seat I just vacated.

“You said you knew, uh, Colton Ledger from Sutton Hall,” Whitty offers with some more squirming.

Cole and I nod at each other in a subtle greeting. I hand the two bottles to them and head back to the bar.
