“Oh, you poor dear,” gushed Vanessa as she watched Jessie, a nurse by training, lightly feel Flemming’s shoulder while he sat in a kitchen chair. His shirt was off and the powdery dust was thick on his neck, back and chest.

Vanessa leaned close, holding his face in her hands. “I knew you should never have come to this place.” The big man frowned but she didn’t notice or if she did she thought it was from the pain. She hadn’t stopped talking since Flemming was helped off the four-wheeler and into the house.

After three minutes of questioning, prodding and poking, Jessie gave her diagnosis, “I’m only a nurse but I don’t think anything is broken. You’re going to be sore but everything seems sound.”

Flemming nodded. The initial, intense pain had subsided to a dull ache. He could move his arm and shoulder though it was admittedly painful. He retired to the bunkhouse where he showered then put on clean clothes before returning to the kitchen.

Vanessa sat at the table still talking, prattling along nonsensically. When Flemming came through the door she jumped to her feet and rushed to give him a hug. “Are you going to be all right? I should never have let you get on a horse. You could have been killed. I don’t know if I could live without you.”

Ricky stepped through the door, waiting for Vanessa and Flemming to move so he could come in the house. He had been out instructing the crew on stripping the calves and moving them to join the others in the weaning pen. “Are you going to be okay?” he asked the rich man.

Flemming watched his young friend. A small smile suddenly appeared. “I’ll be fine but I won’t be much help the rest of the day.”

Ricky smiled. “That’s all right. We’ve got plenty of help. I’ll even stay here with you if you would like.”

“No, I’m fine.” He winked at the young rancher. “To be honest it’ll give Vanessa and me some quality time together.” Both men turned to look at the woman.

She had been sitting to the side watching the exchange. Her face lit up. “That would be wonderful! We haven’t been able to spend even a minute together since we got here.” She looked at Ricky then at Jessie. “I’ll be able to take care of him now. You guys just do whatever you do.” She stood at Flemming’s side and reached to run her fingers through his hair. “We might be back for supper.” Then with a seductive smile aimed at the big man, added, “Maybe.”

The young couple stepped away from the door to allow Flemming and Vanessa, holding hands, to exit the kitchen and walk outside. Jessie turned with a confused expression. Ricky grinned and shrugged.

“What?” she asked.

His grin expanded. “I don’t know what it is but he has something cooked up.” Both watched through the screen door as the couple walked through the lawn and out the gate toward a hill in one of the pastures.
