Inevitably, Henry would find out Adam’s secret. Someday, somehow… And more often than Adam cared to admit, he imagined it going well. At times the daydream starts with angry thugs shouting threats at a stranger or two. Adam and Henry happen to pass by and overhear the accusations. Fists fly, odds are uneven and while other witnesses ignore the beating, Adam steps in to help. And Henry joins him. Together they save the handsome stranger or two, and afterwards Henry admits he knew—or at least he suspected—Adam’s secret. He doesn’t care. They stay friends, business partners. They sail on, and Henry helps keep Adam’s secret from the crew.

Henry’s real reaction smashed the daydream to death. Miguel began describing Cevet, but the look on Henry’s face stopped him cold. There was no tolerance. No understanding. No acceptance. The reality—surprise, surprise—was that Henry thought like every other traditionalist and sailor, dead set against even the thought of perverts. His skin’s greenish sheen and the violent shudder stopped Miguel from elaborating beyond the men handholding and kissing.

Henry regained control after a moment of awkward silence and then offered to save Adam from Eamonn’s disgusting plans. He went further with his Nyryn magic, setting a trap for Eamonn. Once you’re alone, get him to look into your eyes, then say, ‘The fog envelopes you, follow my command’. Unlike the wards to protect Adam’s mind, which Henry assured him were like thick castle walls, the new spell was risky and weak. If the trap worked, saving Adam from Eamonn’s depraved desires—Henry’s words—it was only because of Eamonn’s missing focus and failed concentration. The new plan was still simple: Isolate, distract, then strike.

They avoided discussing the content of the distraction.

So this time, Adam entered Cevet fully aware of what awaited him. A simple duet of violin and drum beats backed the buzz of a couple dozen conversations. Cherry-scented pipe smoke twisted through the tightly packed crowd, past men of all shapes and sizes, rich and poor. He elbowed through, dodged strangers’ groping hands and heated looks while he searched for Eamonn, though he noticed a few men he wished he had time to pursue. Only yesterday he’d been heartsick over Gregory. While he hadn’t gotten over it—love never just disappeared—he’d started living again, moving forward again. Wanting again.

What he wanted most now, though, was Eamonn’s story. Miguel and Henry waited at either end of the alley, ready to follow Eamonn once Adam succeeded. Isolate, seduce, and strike. The first two parts of the plan were easy, and he expected the man to cooperate, even take the lead. Adam stopped a moment, closed his eyes and sucked a deep breath through his nose, noting the musk of aroused men like a cloud embracing him. The pounding pulse of the drum spurred him on, and he opened his eyes to take in the enticing flesh all around.

And there sat Eamonn, alone, hands clenched around a pewter mug, eyes darting from face to face. Adam followed Henry’s instructions and approached the table to complete the spell as Eamonn expected.
