CHAPTER 15

Molly

“You’ve got it bad,” Preeta observes as I beeline for my car after school on Wednesday. For once, I plan to make it to the library on time. “I’ve never seen you walk this fast.”

“I’ve got it bad,” I confirm. There’s no point in denying it. I want to see Holden. Three days have felt tortuous, and I have to keep reminding myself to take things slowly because my body, my heart, and my brain don’t seem to be on the same page.

My body wants him in every way, right now, full stop.

My heart wants to shake off its four-year ban, let him in a little more, and learn to trust him now that he’s edged open the rusty guard gate.

My brain is an exhausted referee at a wrestling match among toddlers, telling everyone to use their words, keep their hands to themselves, and have a time out.

My brain doesn’t have a snowball’s chance.

“Have fun. Full report tomorrow,” she instructs. I nod before rushing off.

Holden and I have either talked or texted every day since Saturday—all friendly, flirty, maybe-a-little-dirty texts. Case in point, the exchange which made me choke on my water as I was walking to the teacher parking lot yesterday afternoon.

Holden: My abs want to know if you’ll be wearing a dress tomorrow.

Me: Your abs and your other parts will find out when you see me.

Holden: Those parts hope you’ll be wearing a dress.

Me: Why?

Holden: So I can remove it in one, efficient move against a bookshelf.

Score one for efficiency. My heart has been racing ever since.

And yes, I’m wearing a dress.

Who am I kidding? It’s been racing all day, thinking about the ginormous elephant in the library—the sexual energy between us is white hot, and if we do chance upon a desolate corner of the library basement, the bookshelves will get a workout.

I made the mistake of mentioning my Saturday night escapades earlier to Preeta, who yelped loudly in the library and peppered me with equally loud questions about lingerie. Now I’m pretty sure half the student body knows I’m wearing a lavender lace bra and panties. Some of them seemed impressed.

Thanks to the traffic gods who seemed to like me today, I arrive for my shift early and get all my work done in record time.

Now, the closer it gets to the five o’clock reading hour, the more I twirl my hair around my fingers, anxiously awaiting Holden’s arrival.

“Hey.” The soft tenor of his voice behind me sends a chill along my skin. His chin hovers just over my shoulder, and my body warms without him even touching me. I’m filled with my usual relief that I don’t have to face the kids alone, but also something else—I realize I missed him. Not only my body, but my heart too. My brain all but waves a white flag. When his hand lands on the small of my back, I feel an involuntary shudder. “Big crowd today.”

“Hey.” I turn to look at him and my stomach
