The dragon hadn’t given them a timeframe for his arrival. That fact set Gary’s teeth on edge. Even a brief, private getaway with Braeleigh who’d sorely missed his company couldn’t drive the worry from his mind for long.

“You seem distracted,” Braeleigh observed as she reassembled her armor.

“Distracted?” Gary echoed incredulously. “I just invited a dragon here. Yeah. I’m a little distracted.”

Braeleigh huffed. “So, what? We’re adventurers. Dealing with dragons and orcs and misguided royals is what our job is all about. Still not sure what we get out of Kurgath being frozen in our basement. I mean, aside from not having to worry about him showing up in the middle of one of our other battles.”

“There’s only going to be one battle,” Gary promised absently. “And as for the dragon, what’s more intimidating to an army outside our walls watching a dragon enter the palace and never come out?”

Dawn light filtered through the curtains as Braeleigh put a finger to her lips. “I suppose I’d have to wonder whether they had a dragon in their back pocket to spring on me.”

“Exactly,” Gary replied. “It buys us time. I’m not sure what we’ll do with the time yet. But this is a siege. The longer we can drag it out, the harder it is on the camping armies.”

He walked over and threw back the curtains.

Durrotek spread before him, drenched in brilliant sunlight. It looked so full of hope, of promise, of potential. But that illusion was spoiled when Braeleigh came up by his side. “See that?”

Following the line of her arm and finger, Gary squinted into the glare.

“Shit,” he muttered. “No rest for the wicked.”

There, a mere speck in the distance, an awkward bird flapped ungainly wings. But the flick of a dangling tail revealed the identity of the flying shape on a heading straight for Durrotek.

Dragon.

“Want to pop down to the dungeons and level up quick?” Braeleigh asked with a peck on Gary’s cheek. Her lips were soft and warm.

He wouldn’t let that distract him. “You’re on board with Zeeto’s mass murder plan all of a sudden?”

“You haven’t asked where Caspian is,” she replied coldly.

Suddenly, Gary felt sick. “Where’s Caspian?”

“It was one of the prisoners. We don’t know which one. They don’t talk to us—just insults. It’s all the human they speak. Zeeto won’t let me down there. He said you need the XP. He said it’s key to our victory. I can’t avenge him myself. Will you do this for me?”

Swallowing past a lump in his throat, Gary couldn’t even look her in the eye. “Yeah. I’ll do it. Lemme get my guitar. How… how long you think before the dragon gets here?”

“Do it quick. Forget Zeeto. Use fire. That lightning spell won’t cook them fast enough.”

Gary made his way down to the dungeons, grabbing the Axe of Shredding on the way.

What am I doing? he asked himself as he made his way through the palace. Killing prisoners?

Another side of him wondered: Why was this so much worse than
