Allie woke to the smell of coffee and the sight of sunlight streaming in around the edges of the barn’s shutters and doors. She stretched, then pulled her arms back under the cover, shivering.

“Morning,” Jake said. “I’ve got you a cup of coffee here. Want lots of sugar?”

“Please,” Allie said. “But I need to check on CeCe and the foal first.”

“They’re fine. I’ve cleaned up the stall and fed CeCe. She’s a sweet thing, isn’t she?”

“Not always. She’s been amazingly calm during her whole pregnancy though. How’s Star?” Allie sat up in bed and pulled the blankets up with her just as Jake brought her a steaming cup of coffee.

“Having his breakfast,” he said, grinning. Then he nodded toward the doors. “By the way, the sun’s out,” he said.

“So the storm’s over.” She took the coffee and sipped it. “Oh, thank you. That old pot makes good coffee, doesn’t it?”

“Makes great coffee,” he said, before taking a swallow from his own mug. “Want me to make my famous egg and egg omelet?”

“Mmm,” Allie said. “You might have to put the eggs near the heater. They’re probably frozen. It feels a lot colder this morning.”

“Way ahead of you,” he said, fetching the carton of eggs from in front of the ceramic heater. “I think the storm must have passed sometime during the night and once the clouds cleared away the temperature dropped.” He set the frying pan on the stove and dropped in a generous pat of butter. When it sizzled, he quickly cracked four eggs into the pan.

“Go ahead and finish them,” Allie said, nodding toward the carton. “I’m starving and I’m not sure who’d survive the battle if we fought over the last two eggs.”

Jake put in the last two eggs and quickly beat them in with the others. Within a moment, he’d dished them up a fluffy pile of scrambled eggs on paper plates. “Eggs and crackers?” he said, handing her a plate and a sleeve of butter crackers.

“Thank you, sir.” Allie dug into her surprisingly good feast and finished before Jake did. “Wow,” she sighed contentedly. “What did you do to the eggs?”

“I found some Tabasco packets in the plastic bag of condiments you threw into the suitcase.”

“Tabasco? My dad must have gotten them from somewhere. I don’t remember ever tasting it. But those eggs were good.”

“Glad you liked them.”

Allie finished her coffee and went to dip some water into the cup. She had to break a thin film of ice on the bucket. She grabbed her down coat that she’d hung on a protruding nail near one of the heaters. The bottom of the coat was mostly dry. She quickly slipped it on and zipped it and put on her work boots.

“Are you warm enough?” she asked him.

“Sure. Your dad’s coverall is just about the warmest thing I’ve ever worn.”

“That’s good, because I don’t know what we’d have done if it hadn’t been here.” She went over to the stall and spoke to CeCe, who was standing patiently while Star nursed.
