Chapter 6

Amanda’s face softened. “I have two daughters. Madeline is six and Penelope is four.”

“Those names are exactly what I’d expect Craig to call his daughters; slightly old fashioned, but trend setting. Feminine but not too girly sounding.” Jamie cursed her loose tongue as Amanda’s expression hardened at the mention of Craig, then an unexpected grin from Amanda had Jamie off balance again.

“You have no idea how much strategy went into these names.”

Jamie relaxed a little bit, a mirror of Amanda’s languid smile. “I’m named after my father. He’s James.”

“I was hoping you were named after that actress, Jamie Lee Curtis. She’s so hot.”

Jamie blinked. “Hot as in you are bisexual, or hot as in aesthetically pleasing.”

“Jamie, I proposed to you.” Amanda’s flat tone didn’t really answer her question.

“That was about revenge on Craig. We didn’t discuss any...” Jamie’s cheeks burned and she didn’t know what to do next. Amanda sucked her bottom lip into her mouth and Jamie’s face got even hotter.

“Most cis-het people I’ve met wouldn’t conceive of a plan like this. I mean, yes, I’m delighted at the opportunity to stop Craig from winning with a shitty scheme, and I’m so fucking pleased to help you out of a bad situation. Our kids are siblings, they should grow up together.”

“That doesn’t... um?” She gritted her teeth against an impatient sigh. “You didn’t really answer my question. Are you bi?”

“Yes. Yes, I’m bisexual. It’s funny, you know, because it took me a long time to realise that everyone wasn’t; but I guess that also means I’m lucky to never have to question myself. I think it’s because Ma is too and she’s always been open about it.”

“Wow.” Jamie tried to collect her thoughts, but she felt like she’d been electrocuted, and everything stopped working. She’d always swum around like a drowning kitten on this matter, never really knowing if she was valid in her desires or not. Most of the people she’d had sex with were men, and she wished she had the confidence in herself to know that it didn’t make her less.

“And, I mean, fuck me. You are so beautiful, Jamie.”

Jamie waved her hand dismissively. “Yes. It’s my best asset.” Just because she knew she was beautiful didn’t mean anything about her. It was just her body and that was the main cause of her problems right now. Her body was a tool for others to use, a plaything for herself, and sometimes a joy, but right now she was just tired of only being seen as beautiful.

“Oh?” Amanda frowned. “I didn’t expect you to say that.”

“I’m not going to lie to you. I know I’m beautiful. It’s a fact.”

Amanda tilted her head and her glasses slid down her nose a little. “People don’t often see you properly, do they? They look at your face and make assumptions.”

“People do that to everyone. It’s important to know your strengths and use them.” Jamie parroted her father out of habit, then swallowed away the rising bitter taste in her mouth.
