THE HARDWARE STORE had been slow all morning, which was a good thing because Wyatt was unusually fussy. Emily had just put him down for a nap, earlier than usual, when the bells on the front door rang.
From her office, she saw a woman approach the counter and speak to her grandfather. She looked vaguely familiar, but Emily couldnât place her. Her grandfather nodded his head toward the office, and the woman smiled. As soon as she did, Emily knew who it was. Only someone related to the Sterling boys would have dimples like that. This had to be Lukeâs mother. She stood and met the woman at the door.
âHello, Emily,â the woman said. âIâm Colleen Thomas, Lukeâs mother.â
âI thought thatâs who you were,â she said. âI see now where Luke gets his dimples. Itâs nice to meet you, Mrs. Thomas.â
âPlease, call me Colleen.â
Her smile was genuine, and despite the negative things Emily had heard about her, she immediately liked her. She could only assume that Colleen had found out about Wyatt, but who had told her?
âIâm sorry for showing up like this, but when Luke called me this morning and told me the news, I couldnât wait one more minute to meet my grandson.â She looked over Emilyâs shoulder into the office. âIs he here?â
âYes,â Emily said. âBut heâs taking a nap right now. Would you like some coffee?â
Colleenâs face fell slightly, but she nodded enthusiastically. âIâd love some. Our coffee maker broke, so Gerald took it as a sign that we needed to quit. The only time I drink coffee now is at work.â
âHow do you like it?â Emily walked over to the counter where the pot was.
Her grandfather kept a pot of fresh coffee in the store all day long, especially in the winter. He claimed he didnât drink that much, but it was always empty at the end of the day, even when they didnât have any customers.
âSugar, no cream.â
Luke told Colleen about Wyatt, so he must be okay with her coming to see the boy, right? Maybe Emily should text him to double-check? No. He was moving horses and wouldnât have service.
Emily poured the coffee and handed it to her. âWhere do you live, Colleen?â
âSnowflake.â
The town of Snowflake was almost two and a half hours away from Coronado. âLuke must have called you pretty early.â
âNot too early.â She shook her head. âBut then again, I get up before most people. Always have. Luke gets that from me.â
Luke was an early riser? Emily tucked that information away for later. She was a night owl herself. âThe chairs in my office are more comfortable than these stools. Wyatt just went down, so it might be a while before heâs up.â
Colleen followed her into her office where Emily and her grandfather sat down on the sofa. âHow are you, Denny?â
âNot too bad, not too bad.â Grandpa poured himself a cup of coffee. âHowâs Gerald?â
âHeâs fine. Although his lack of caffeine in the morning is causing some issues.
