CHAPTER FIVE

‘HI, THERE.’ CADE LOOKED across the room as Rebecca came into the kitchen the next morning. His eyes glinted approval, his gaze resting on her for a fraction longer than was necessary, taking in the curving lines of the pencil-slim skirt that hugged her hips and the sleeveless top with spaghetti straps that revealed a smooth expanse of golden skin.

The toaster pinged and he jumped slightly, distracted and disorientated for a second or two. Rebecca went over to him. It was somehow gratifying to know that she had such an effect on him.

He was obviously trying to multitask, toasting English muffins and whisking up what looked like a Hollandaise sauce at the same time. As she approached him she saw there were a couple of eggs gently poaching in a pan of hot water on the hob.

‘Did you have a good night?’ he asked.

‘I did—thank you. I fell asleep as soon as my head touched the pillow. And you were right about the view from the French doors—it’s fantastic.’ She’d stepped on to the balcony first thing this morning and seen the rainforest laid out in front of her, sloping down the hillside, and in the distance the bay had been a vivid blue.

‘I’m glad you took the time to look.’ He smiled. ‘I thought I would make eggs Benedict for breakfast...is that all right with you?’

‘Oh, that sounds wonderful. I’m starving. It must be the fresh air that’s giving me an appetite. You wouldn’t know there had been a storm here, would you? Everything just looks as though it’s been washed clean.’

He nodded. ‘We get these storms from time to time, and after a downpour everything springs to life—plants and trees green up and flowers open.’

‘It’s beautiful.’

Sunlight streamed in through the tall windows and a warm breeze drifted in through the open glass doors. Out on the veranda she saw that a table had been laid with a white damask cloth, and there was a jug filled with fresh juice, along with two glasses.

Cade slid the hot buttered muffins on to plates that were warm from the oven and topped them with slices of smoked salmon. Then he added the lightly poached eggs, drizzled smooth Hollandaise sauce over the top and sprinkled chopped chives over that.

‘Mmm...it looks and smells delicious.’

‘Good...that’s what I was aiming for. Let’s eat outside, shall we?’

He led the way to the veranda, carrying the food on a tray that also contained a coffee pot and porcelain mugs. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee drifted on the air and Rebecca followed it as though mesmerised.

‘This is heavenly,’ she said as they sat down to eat. ‘It must be the best way to start the day.’

This part of the veranda looked out over the garden, a wonderful landscape of fruit trees—lemon, tamarind and pineapple among them—and there were palms that surrounded an immaculate lawn area. Showy purple bougainvillaea and scarlet kalanchoe brought colour to the borders, along with sweet-scented pink and yellow frangipani. The delicate fragrance drifted over to them on soft air currents.
