Chapter Eight

THE NEXT THREE WEEKS passed like a dream for Sarah. Each day she spent with a little girl she loved. A little girl who was learning Spanish at a rate of knots, which was funny and smart. Who needed cuddles more than any other child Sarah had looked after.

To say she was in love with Amalia would be an understatement.

She saw Enrique at 6 pm with Amalia, where he always treated her with the due respect of his niece’s nanny.

Calling her Miss Louis almost always made her giggle, but she held it back.

After 8 pm she was Sarah, his lover. He treated her with all the respect and love that she could ask for. Some nights they sat in the dining room talking for hours, others she had barely eaten her dessert, and he was whisking her upstairs for a passionate lovemaking session. His appetite was insatiable, and some days she went down for a nap with Amalia in the afternoon because Enrique had allowed her only a few hours sleep the night before.

Sarah found herself falling more in love with Enrique as each day passed.

Her period was a week over due, and she was ignoring it. Convinced it was just late, she allowed herself to be fooled. When Sarah started to feel sick in the mornings and the fatigue dragging at her couldn’t be put down to a simple lack of sleep, she made a doctor’s appointment.

She left the doctor’s office with information on her pregnancy and prenatal vitamins.

She couldn’t believe it. They had only made love once without protection, but that was obviously enough to conceive a child. What was she was going to do?

A baby. Her baby.

She’d have her own family again.

Tears slid down her cheeks and tickled at her nose. It had been so long since she’d belonged anywhere, or to anyone. This child would be everything to her.

But how would Enrique feel about it? He had made it very clear that he would not feel pressured into marriage and Sarah would not see him trapped. They did not have a conventional relationship, but she felt that given time, it could become one. Time she didn’t have. She was six weeks along. She would have to find out how he felt about her and fast.

Enrique was leaving on a business trip to London, and she knew that tonight would be one of the last times she would get to speak to him face to face for a few weeks.

She hid the proof in her room and went about getting ready for dinner. She pulled out a new green top and a pair black pants for dinner that had been hanging mysteriously in her wardrobe and sighed.

She had bought quite a few pieces of clothing for herself from the small boutique in the village, but lately, clothes had started appearing in her wardrobe that she hadn’t bought. Beautiful clothes that Enrique had ordered from the same boutique. She somehow knew he’d find a way around her refusal for him to buy her new clothes.
