Chapter 21
Emily twiddled her fingers as she waited for Geoffrey to arrive. The hippy coffee shop was almost empty, which suited her just fine. But the smell of roast beef hung low in the air and caused her stomach to rumble. She had missed lunch without knowing it. The orange juice she was sipping would have to hold her till she got home.
She leaned back against her chair. What did Mr. Hart want with her? His request had popped out of the blue, and she’d been too shocked to say no. Though a certain part of her would argue that the idea of spending time with him wasn’t disagreeable.
Emily glanced at her phone. His forty-five minutes was almost up. She would give him five extra minutes, but then she was gone.
The doorbell jingled. Emily looked up to see Mr. Hart enter, and her pulse quickened. How could he look this good in a coat over button-down shirt with rolled up sleeves and a pair of jeans? She noticed the few customers in the shop assessing him appreciatively. She looked down at herself—she looked frumpy in comparison.
Soon he reached her table, removed his coat, and sat down. “I hope I’m not late.” he said. “Thanks for waiting.”
Emily shook her head. “No, you’re right on time.”
“Good.” He lifted his hand, and a waitress came over.
“How may I help you, sir?” the young lady asked.
“Could I have a cup of espresso with a cinnamon stick on the side?” he said. He glanced at Emily. “Would you like anything?” he asked.
She shook her head, still shocked at what she’d just heard. Unbelievable. How in the world was the guy sitting opposite her the only other person she’d met who loved the espresso-cinnamon combination?
“That would be all,” he said to the waitress.
“Coming right up.”
“Thanks.” The waitress left.
Geoffrey must have noticed her staring. “What?” he asked. “Do I have something on my face?” He touched his jaw.
A thrill ran through Emily at the sight. Why did he have to draw attention to his jawline that was just pure perfection? “No … no no. It just … I’ve never met anyone else who liked cinnamon sticks with their espresso.” There was no way she was telling him how everything about his face from his eyes to his lips and to his jawline were affecting her.
“It was a favorite of my parents, and then became mine too,” he said.
“Funny, it was my mum’s favorite too,” Emily responded.
Geoffrey’s fingers played with the edge of the napkin in front of him. “Is she back in New Jersey?”
“No, she died last year.”
His hand stilled. “I’m sorry.”
“It’s okay.”
The air became awkward, uncomfortable even. Fortunately, the waitress returned at that moment with his coffee. Geoffrey picked up the cinnamon stick and stirred the coffee with it before taking a sip.
“I’m surprised they have cinnamon sticks available,” Emily said.
“I asked them to stock it.”
Right. She’d forgotten he was supposed to be someone important—he was a patron at the boutique, which should have been her first clue.
