With his journey delayed by the fire in Lamb House and the obligatory stops in France, James had missed finding Zhukowsky in Rome. The Russian had followed his emperor to The Hague, where the young czar had convened an international peace congress; he and James agreed to meet in Florence instead, in June.

James accordingly first went eastward by rail through Genoa and across Italy to Venice, accepting the insistently repeated invitations of Daniel and Ariana Curtis to be their guest at the Palazzo Barbaro. They were away but urged him to make himself at home in the Barbaro, where another guest was already in residence, a Miss Jessie Allen, with whom he promptly formed a cordial friendship. James took his old familiar apartment upstairs, worked in the mornings in the library, and reacquainted himself with Venice in the evenings, making free use of the gondola piloted by an old friend, the gondolier Angelo, whom the Curtises put at his and Miss Allen’s disposal.
