With his partner out of commission, Browne would eventually drift off to greener pastures, eventually marrying Diane and moving to her property in Black Forest. “He was good at that,” Miank observes, “cutting his losses. He had a way of controlling his life, of doing things just the way he wanted and never looking back. I guess you could say that he was very goal-oriented.”

CHAPTER TWELVE

“CALL ME WHEN YOU PULL THE SWITCH”

In early April 1995, Jon Miank was released from his Canon City, Colorado, prison cell to take a drive with Captain Lou Smit, Detective Michele Hodges, and Department of Corrections Officer Larry Rand on a tour of his old haunts: here was an auto supply store from which he and Browne had stolen engine parts; there, a community college where they had boosted computer monitors. They’d netted a coin collection from a ranch off Highway 85 and stripped the copper plumbing from an empty house on Link Road. “We really trashed that place,” Miank would remember, and selling copper scrap had subsequently become a lucrative sideline for the team.
