Chapter 15
Luna
My something-bad-is-about-to-happen senses tingled when I took a sip of my coffee, and I froze with the cup to my mouth. The door to Country Coffee shut behind me and smacked me in the ass. I stumbled onto the pavement.
A car zoomed through the roundabout, almost hitting a pedestrian at the crossing, and the startled man shouted and waved a fist at the driver. Council workers trimmed the hedges in the park opposite the café, and the machines filled the air with a soft buzz. My gaze landed on the lane behind Annie’s Ice Cream because that was where the specters emerged from a portal to try and kidnap me. A milk truck turned into the lane, but no serpent soldiers. Alert and tense, I scanned the rest of the area, finding no signs of snakes, dark mists, or black portals opening in windows.
Squeezing Gable’s coffee, and mine, I hurried to the next crossing, not even waiting for the car to clear before I crossed. Being out in the open and by myself made me jumpy. At least when I was with Talon last time, he had a weapon. My magic didn’t really work on the specters and that left me vulnerable.
When I rounded the corner by the Western Advocate, the local newspaper, I spotted two guys standing outside of Gable’s shop. At first, they appeared to be bodyguards, at seven feet tall with dark suits and sunglasses. Cliché yes, but they stood out when no one else on the street dressed that formally or packed as much muscle as them.
Hairs on the back of my neck stood to attention. I squinted, getting a better look. They each clutched serpent canes. I squeaked, squeezing the coffees hard, making some of the liquid overflow, and dribble over my hand.
“Shit.” My heart pounded as I ducked behind the brick wall.
My grandfather had found me, and poor Gable was stuck inside his shop in trouble. I banged my head against the wall. What the hell was I going to do? Little old me wasn’t in a position to take on two serpent soldiers at five foot three. Sure, I could throw hot coffee in their faces, distract them while I snuck inside to rescue Gable. But their serpent canes could do a lot worse, and I wasn’t willing to find out what.
I held my breath, clutching the cups close to my stomach as I peered around the wall again. An older woman with a tight dress and fur coat exited Gable’s shop. The bodyguards nodded and followed her. One opened the back door of the Range Rover for her, closing it when she got in.
What the fuck? That wasn’t Camus. It took my seizing brain a few seconds to recognize her, and I gulped.
Phoebe Prince.
What the hell was she doing visiting Gable?
The Range Rover tire’s screeched as it tore out of the car park into traffic, cutting off two other cars. I crouched on the ground, head bent, waiting until it turned right at Russell Street and disappeared out of sight.
