Diane White did not sleep alone on her fourth night in Las Vegas. Andrew Montgomery was a wonderful lover—far more interested in pleasing her than in anything else.
So why did she feel cheapened by the experience? This handsome man slept next to her, looking as innocent as a newborn baby, and she tossed fitfully on the edge of sleep, fading for a few seconds at a time before waking again with a burning heat nestled between her eyes.
Damn. This was just too much. She felt guilty. That was the problem. Guilty because she'd enjoyed herself more in their lovemaking session than she'd been able to enjoy sex at any other point in her life. Guilty because her son was only one room away— assuming that he'd actually bothered to come home this time—and she was in bed with a man who'd been a friendly acquaintance at best when they arrived a few days earlier.
A few days? Sometimes it seemed like only hours, other times it seemed like years. Nothing made sense anymore. She'd truly hoped to regain her equilibrium during this little vacation, but instead her life just kept spinning farther into orbit. She felt dirty when she knew she should not. She could hold no anger for Gabriel staying out all night, when she knew that she should be scolding him for leaving the hotel without her permission. She could not even be angry with Shaun—sweet, kind Shaun, who'd unwittingly stolen her son's affection—for letting the boy out of his sight.
Every time she thought about how she should feel, her emotions refused to respond in the right way. Damn it, she deserved better than this. She'd fought hard to get her life into some semblance of order, but everywhere she turned chaos bloomed like wildflowers.
She looked at Andrew and thought of Sam, doing her best to ignore the guilty voice that demanded a little more respect for dear, departed John. A tired, bitter anger bloomed in her chest: not enough to make her feel overly bad, but just enough to make her wonder when everything had gone so horribly wrong.
Just enough to keep sleep at bay for another night. Long after Andrew kissed her good morning and left to prepare for the grand opening of the Palace in two days, she sprawled across the bed. Sleep would not come to give her comfort and shelter. Only the nightmares again. More nightmares than any one soul should have to suffer alone.
