CHAPTER 34

***

THE HOMECOMING

As a battered and subdued John Wesley stepped down from his horse, a pregnant Jane ran into his arms. “Oh, Wes, I didn’t think I would ever see you again.

“Nobody was going to keep me away from your loving arms,” he said as they embraced and kissed.

“You have to swear to me that you will hang up your guns forever,” said Jane.

“Why”

She placed his hand on her belly, smiled, and said, “Because you’re going to be a daddy.”

A huge smile came to his face.

“That’s wonderful. When?”

“In February. Now, swear to me that you will hang up your guns. I don’t want our children growing up without a father.”

“All right. I swear.”

“Thank you,” she said and kissed him again, long and hard.

The sound of horses plodding down the lane awakened Wes. He jumped out of bed, grabbed his shotgun, and peeked outside. Standing near the gate were a group of people bearing gifts. “Welcome home, Wes,” they shouted.

Wes smiled and lowered his shotgun.

“Thank you very much. It’s good to be home finally.”

Several months later, on February 6th, 1873, nineteen-year-old John Wesley paced the floor. He heard the sound of a baby crying, and the door to the bedroom opened. Wiping his hands on a towel, a doctor exited the room and said, “Congratulations, Wes. You are the father of a healthy baby girl.”

He rushed into the bedroom where sixteen-year-old Jane laid in bed, cuddling the newborn infant. He walked over, kneeled beside the bed, pulled back the blanket covering the baby’s head, smiled, and said, “She’s just as beautiful as her mother.”

“What should we name her?”

“Molly. Molly Elizabeth Hardin.”

Jane smiled and kissed the baby. Molly meet your daddy, John Wesley Hardin. The most famous ex-gunfighter in the great state of Texas.”

Wes leaned forward and kissed his baby girl on the forehead.

“Oh, Wes, we’re finally a family.”
