Somewhere on the boat, Gretel heard the words, "We are clear of all lines. Fifteen yards at the dock. All clear of traffic. Port side and Starboard side, all clear."

She knew the boat was leaving the shore. That was unsettling in itself, and so was the thought of escaping in broad daylight.

Chapter 18

Half an hour after they’d left the shore, Kent felt a tap on his shoulder when he was getting more vodka from the supply box.

He hoped he hadn’t been discovered—found out. He turned around slowly, thinking the worst. What he saw was one of the crew in a uniform similar to the captain’s. Kent took him to be the engineer. “You’re a medic, right?” the guy asked him.

“Yes, I'm a nurse, fully qualified.”

“Come with me. Bert’s not in a good way. You need to find out what's wrong with him.”

“Sure.” He followed the man to the security guard’s quarters. Bert was doubled over on the bed holding his stomach.

Kent walked closer, trying to appear confident. “When did this start?”

Bert looked up. “Since breakfast.”

“What did you eat?”

“Just what everybody else ate for breakfast, I guess—what the new girl delivered on the tray.”

Kent talked fast, so the other man wouldn’t focus on the new girl. “No one else is sick. It can’t be food poisoning. Open your mouth and stick out your tongue.” He looked in his throat and squinted. Then he held Bert’s wrist to check his pulse while looking at his watch. “Lie down. I need to check your stomach.”

“Is it appendicitis? Everyone in my family has had theirs removed except me.”

“Let’s see.” When Bert lay down, Kent pressed on his stomach while Bert winced every now and again. “Okay, you can sit up now.” Then he turned to look at the crew member and motioned to him while he moved to the other side of the room. In a low voice, Kent told him, “It’s nothing too serious. It seems like a bad case of constipation.”

“Am I dying?” Bert called out.

“No.” Kent told him. Then he turned back to the other man. “He’s not dying but that doesn’t mean it’s not excruciatingly painful. He needs to be kept quiet. Obviously, he can’t work today. He needs liquids.”

“I’ll tell the captain.”

When he walked out, Kent headed back to Bert. “Have you ever had irritable bowel syndrome?”

“I’m not sure.” He held his stomach and his face contorted.

“You have a severe case of constipation.”

“No. I’ve never had that before.”

“You’re backed up. That’s what’s causing the pain. Things will right themselves, but you’ll need warm liquids. I’ll see if I can find you some prune juice or something to help.”

“Thank you.”

“You need to rest. You can’t work today.”

“Okay.”

“That man’s just gone to tell the captain.”

“Thank you,” Bert said again.

“Who is he?”

“Errol. He’s the engineer. He’s a good friend of mine.”

“If he’s not doing much today, maybe he can stay with you.”

“Okay.”

Kent headed to the door. “I’ll see what I can find you.”

“Thanks.”

Kent found some orange juice and took that to Bert, along with a large bottle of water.
