Notes

This visceral, kinetic story is a great example of the Apocalyptic Sublime, which so pre-occupied the painter John Martin (notably in his best-known painting, “The Great Day of his Wrath”). Hope Hodgson’s sustained description of the cyclone is impressive in its detail—as convincingly well-observed as the effect it has upon the unfortunate vessel. Did Hope Hodgson ever experience anything of the like? Unlikely, but he had an imagination of feverish intensity, one that could imagine far stranger things. Yet, here, although the cyclone has at times an uncanny quality, it stays within the realms of physics: it is nothing less than nature in all its ferocity. The frail vessel of Man is dwarfed, and the crew only survive through some inchoate act of grace. The universe is a savage place, Hope Hodgson seems to be telling us: our very existence hangs by a thread.
