We settled into an enjoyable little routine for the short time the four of us stayed at Avery’s place.

Avery let me shuttle him around town in the Hummer, showing me where his parents and sister worked and a few other points of interest. “You know, if you think you might stay, you may be money-ahead to return the Hummer and either do ride shares or find something reliable for having here in Bexley,” Avery had mused on our way back to his place.

He was right. Money wasn’t an issue, but the Hummer’s daily rental fee wasn’t cheap and I didn’t need the monstrosity in Bexley.

The day Avery went back to work, I cleaned up the breakfast dishes while visiting with Johnny and Sylvie, and told my grandfather my plans to return the Hummer and look for something a bit more practical.

Sylvie’s eyes sparkled. “I think it’s a great idea. That beast is really nice, but something else might serve you better. During your time here,” she added. “You can always sell it before you go back to California.”

Both Johnny and Sylvie knew about my hands and the needed surgery, and they both were definitely on Team Stay in Bexley Indefinitely, even though they thought they were being neutral.

By the time Avery got home from work that evening, I’d been to a reputable car lot, bought a truck, and talked the salesperson into having someone drive my new truck to the rental place so I could drop off the Hummer.

“Damn, when someone gives you an idea, you go with it, huh?” Avery asked, admiring the truck from the window. He’d showered and now stood in a t-shirt, basketball shorts, and bare feet.

Fuckin’ sexy bare feet.

I had no doubt he’d started going barefoot more since I’d made it known how sexy I thought his feet were. Had nothing to do with it being hot and him wanting to be comfortable. No, he was just teasing me.

“The Hummer was a rash decision and not practical. The truck is a better vehicle and I’ll be able to sell easily once I decide to leave.”

Avery gave a brief nod. “Sounds like a plan.”

“Come on,” Sylvie announced as she made her way to the dining room table. “It’s game night.”

“I don’t—”

Avery slapped a hand over my mouth, his body pressing just enough against me to have me wanting more.

A lot more.

“Don’t say it,” he whispered in my ear.

“Say what?” I mumbled behind his hand.

“Don’t say you don’t play games,” he hissed. “She will make it her personal mission to teach you at least twenty games—card games, board games, role playing games…she has at least fifty and she knows how to use them.” Avery was playing it up now, his lips feathering lightly over my ear, but I wasn’t complaining. Not in the least. “Just sit down at the table. We’ll play the game. She’ll be happy. She’s old, she probably doesn’t have many game nights left.”

Sylvie chucked a napkin ring at his head and Avery yelped.

“Just
