Chapter 13

The following morning was the start of her new job. As she dressed for work, Catriona checked through her messages and yes there were six missed calls from Frankie and a series of texts written in ever increasing hysteria. While she waited for the coffee to brew she called him back.

“Oh, thank God! You’re alive and well at least. I was afraid you’d decided to shoot yourself.”

“I don’t possess a gun Frankie, and anyway shooting jokes aren’t funny. We have enough of the real thing in LA.”

“But when I heard...that goddamn bitch! How dare she!”

“No, no Frankie, calm down. It’s OK, really! Katherine didn’t fire me. I left, for...for personal reasons. She tried to make me stay. You mustn’t blame her.”

“Of course I blame her. She’s been trying to get rid of me for the last year, and firing you is just one more strategy to boot me out.”

“Listen Frankie, this is not about you! Have you heard a word of what I’ve just said? Kat actually asked if I’d come back to work with you. She knows how well we get on. But I’ve left for personal reasons. I’ve been offered another job.”

“But why didn’t you discuss it with me? Why did people see you flying out the building yesterday in floods of tears? Why go without notice?”

Obviously a little creative fiction was needed here.

“I have to start my new job today, and I guess I just felt a little emotional at the thought of leaving you all. I was intending to call you this morning, but I lost my phone, and only found it again late last night.”

“But what am I going to do?” he wailed.

“Go straight around to HR and ask them to advertise for a new PA for you. There are lots of brilliant folk out there, just begging for the job. You’ll secure one within the week, I’m sure.”

“It’s a damn nuisance anyway. After all I’ve done for you. I got you this job. You know Simone and Kat were both dead against your appointment.”

Frankie’s inner bitch was coming out now, as he felt increasingly sorry for himself. Cat knew he could be better than that.

“Look, Frankie, I’m sorry, and it’s true you’ve taught me a lot about how to be an efficient PA, but you have to know I see my future in directing, not administration. You’ll be fine. Just remember the system I set up for you for forward planning. Delegate more responsibility to all your assistant producers and editors, and stick to the core management tasks.”

“OK, OK. Well, cheers, kiddo. I suppose I should wish you best of luck in your new job.”

“That would be nice.” She noticed he didn’t ask where it was. The man was seriously self-absorbed.

“Anyway, Frankie. How are things at home? Are things any better with Connor?”

There was a silence, and then he said, “Sometimes. You know he was in the service for more than twenty years. I think his time in Iraq and Afghanistan took its toll.
