Chapter Eighteen

Spending time in bed with Andy made Desiree forget about dinner, but Sam didn’t forget. He got them moving, which was probably a good thing. A girl couldn’t survive on sex alone, although Andy’s skill made her tempted to try.

Working side by side in her kitchen, they fed the dog, warmed the soup, made toasted cheese sandwiches and opened the second bottle of wine. She’d left out the large tray he’d used to bring dinner in the night before and they had it loaded with food and wine glasses when she remembered Sam needed to go out.

“I’ll take him. I’m dressed.”

He had her there. She was wearing nothing but her fluffy purple robe. “Thanks, but you’re barefoot.”

“I’ll just go fetch my boots.”

“Or you could put on a pair of snow boots from the hall closet.”

“Even better. Come on, pup.”

“While you do that, I’ll carry the tray in. You can bring the wine.”

“Will do,” he called over his shoulder.

“See you soon.” Hefting the tray, she made her way toward the bedroom, smiling at Andy’s one-sided conversation with Sam as he sorted through the snow boot selection.

He and Mary used to have dogs — goldens, as she recalled. Made sense that Andy would feel right at home dealing with Sam.

Setting the tray on a small but sturdy table in front of the beehive fireplace, she opened the flue, grabbed a box of matches and lit the balled-up newspapers under the grate.

During moments like this, when she and Andy were apart, she had mixed emotions about accepting what he so generously gave. But when he held her in his arms, those doubts went out the window.

It wasn’t just sex, either, although he certainly had a talent for that. He also had truckloads of empathy, a gift for putting himself in someone else’s shoes and making them feel heard and understood. That was precious and she lapped it up.

The fire caught, for which she was grateful. It was mainly for atmosphere and she didn’t want to have to fool with it. Speaking of atmosphere, she might want to tidy up.

She pulled up the covers, folded them back and grabbed the pillows off the floor. Andy was wearing his clothes, but hers lay scattered. Snatching them up, she carried them to the clothes hamper in the bathroom.

“Looks great,” Andy called out. “Do I get to sit in your lap?”

“That could make eating dinner a challenge, but I’m up for it if you are.” She walked back into her bedroom. Damn, but he looked good standing in it, his cheeks ruddy from the cold.

“I vote we don’t try it. Chances are we’d start fooling around and get soup and toasted cheese all over your beautiful chair. I’ll haul one in here if you’ll tell me which one you want.”

“How about my purple wingback? I’ll sit in that and you can have this one.” She gestured to the easy chair in front of the fireplace.

“Works for me.” He handed her the open bottle of wine. “Sam, go lie down.
