Chapter Eighteen
Spending time in bed with Andy made Desiree forget about dinner, but Sam didnât forget. He got them moving, which was probably a good thing. A girl couldnât survive on sex alone, although Andyâs skill made her tempted to try.
Working side by side in her kitchen, they fed the dog, warmed the soup, made toasted cheese sandwiches and opened the second bottle of wine. Sheâd left out the large tray heâd used to bring dinner in the night before and they had it loaded with food and wine glasses when she remembered Sam needed to go out.
âIâll take him. Iâm dressed.â
He had her there. She was wearing nothing but her fluffy purple robe. âThanks, but youâre barefoot.â
âIâll just go fetch my boots.â
âOr you could put on a pair of snow boots from the hall closet.â
âEven better. Come on, pup.â
âWhile you do that, Iâll carry the tray in. You can bring the wine.â
âWill do,â he called over his shoulder.
âSee you soon.â Hefting the tray, she made her way toward the bedroom, smiling at Andyâs one-sided conversation with Sam as he sorted through the snow boot selection.
He and Mary used to have dogs â goldens, as she recalled. Made sense that Andy would feel right at home dealing with Sam.
Setting the tray on a small but sturdy table in front of the beehive fireplace, she opened the flue, grabbed a box of matches and lit the balled-up newspapers under the grate.
During moments like this, when she and Andy were apart, she had mixed emotions about accepting what he so generously gave. But when he held her in his arms, those doubts went out the window.
It wasnât just sex, either, although he certainly had a talent for that. He also had truckloads of empathy, a gift for putting himself in someone elseâs shoes and making them feel heard and understood. That was precious and she lapped it up.
The fire caught, for which she was grateful. It was mainly for atmosphere and she didnât want to have to fool with it. Speaking of atmosphere, she might want to tidy up.
She pulled up the covers, folded them back and grabbed the pillows off the floor. Andy was wearing his clothes, but hers lay scattered. Snatching them up, she carried them to the clothes hamper in the bathroom.
âLooks great,â Andy called out. âDo I get to sit in your lap?â
âThat could make eating dinner a challenge, but Iâm up for it if you are.â She walked back into her bedroom. Damn, but he looked good standing in it, his cheeks ruddy from the cold.
âI vote we donât try it. Chances are weâd start fooling around and get soup and toasted cheese all over your beautiful chair. Iâll haul one in here if youâll tell me which one you want.â
âHow about my purple wingback? Iâll sit in that and you can have this one.â She gestured to the easy chair in front of the fireplace.
âWorks for me.â He handed her the open bottle of wine. âSam, go lie down.
