Chapter Sixteen

“What the hell do you mean you’re going back to school? What about Mama? What about me?” Kelsey’s voice continued to rise. “I swear, you’ve turned into the most self-absorbed, mopey, unpleasant person on earth. I don’t know what’s going on, but you’d better snap out of it.”

“Are you through? Because I need to register.”

“Beth. Seriously. You’re just going to leave me here alone with Mama while you go off to play?”

“Getting a degree in business management is not playing,” said Beth.

“Whatever. Are you even listening?”

“I’ve found a place in town. Like an adult day care for Alzheimer’s patients. She can go there while I’m doing my schoolwork.”

“And Covid?”

Beth heaved a heavy sigh.

“Look, Kelsey. This is happening. Why don’t you go back to school, too? Get a degree?”

“Right.”

“Think about it. Surely you want something out of life.”

“Sure. I want to get married and have babies.”

“Then do it.”

“When? How?”

“That I don’t know. That’s up to you,” said Beth.

“I won’t abandon Mama just because you do.”

“I’m not abandoning anyone. It’ll be good for her to get out. It’ll stimulate her mind. Trust me.”

“I don’t trust you. You are the last person I trust.” Kelsey stormed out of the room.

Fuckin’ women. Can’t live with them. Can’t shoot them.

Beth opened the laptop to Vernon College’s website and registered for classes starting in August. That didn’t give her much time. She’d be mostly taking classes online due to the pandemic, but would eventually be in the classroom. She hoped.

She was terrified at the prospect of going back to school. She hadn’t ever done well as a student. Ever. But she had to give it her all. She could get her AA then move away after Mama passed and work for a company. She had to do it now. If she got any older, she might not be hirable.

She had no idea what kind of company she wanted to work for. She figured as long as it had nothing to do with windmills, she’d be okay. She was still pissed at Evie but more so at herself for falling so hard for her. What a fool she’d been.

Beth turned her attention back to the laptop. To hell with Evie, she had a future to prepare for. She ordered her books and was set. She closed the laptop and went back to check on Mama.

She heard the muffled sobs as she approached. Mama was crying into her pillow.

“Mama?” she said. “Mama, what’s wrong?”

There was no answer, but Beth recognized the smell of urine in the air. She placed her hand on Mama’s back.

“Did we have an accident?”

Mama howled like she was in pain. Beth forced herself to remain calm. She couldn’t help if she didn’t know what the issue was.

“Talk to me, Mama.”

“What’s going on?” Kelsey was in the doorway. “Mama? Are you okay?”

“Sh,” said Beth. “Stay calm until we know what’s going on.”

Beth pulled back the covers on the bed. Mama was sopping wet. As were her bedclothes.

“I’ll get some dry sheets,” said Kelsey.

“Mama, it’s okay,” said Beth.
