CHAPTER THIRTEEN
âDamn it,â Darla says as she reads her phone. âJohn just asked me to go to the movies.â
I smile as I wipe down the tables in my section. âI thought it was a casual thing.â I make sure to raise my brows in humor.
âIt is. Heâs just going to the new Ben Affleck film that I really wanted to check out. Ever since that man got back together with Jennifer Lopez, Iâve been on a serious Affleck kick.â By the blush on her face, I can tell this is more than just wanting to see an Affleck film.
âGet out of here. Iâll finish up for you.â
She rises on her toes. âYou mean it?â
âOf course. Go get your Affleck on.â
I smile, and she rushes over to me for a hug. Iâm not used to people hugging me, especially in this manner, so I stand there and let her embrace me while Iâm still bent over, cleaning the table. After all, I guess itâs kind of sweet of her.
âThank you so much. I owe you one.â
âGet out of here.â I swat her away with the rag and move on to the next table.
Darla takes her apron off and leaves the restaurant. I finish my section, then move over to Darlaâs, cleaning the place so itâs ready for tomorrowâs breakfast rush.
âIâm out of here,â Tim says, standing by the door. âYou want me to stay and help you finish up?â
âNo, thank you though. Iâm good.â I stand up and ask hesitantly, âIs Grant still back there?â
âYeah. Heâs in his office. Everything okay?â he asks cautiously.
I smile in reassurance. âYeah. I have some things to go over with him about the accounting.â
Timâs brows rise into his hairline. âHe actually gave you his books?â
âThat surprises you?â I tilt my head in question.
He grimaces, then holds his hands up. âNot in a bad way. Do you think you can help him?â
âYeah, actually, I can,â I say, surprised by the pride in my voice.
His brown eyes look down to the floor, and a grin appears as he shakes his head in amazement. âRock was right.â
âRock? Oh dear. I donât know if I want to know what that comment means.â
He laughs. âI knew you showed up here for a reason.â
âThanks?â I say with a raised brow.
âHave a good night, Sophie. And thank you for helping Grant. He needs it.â
I lock the door from the inside after Tim leaves and head back to the office, where Grant is sitting at his desk.
Trying to ignore the butterflies swarming in my stomach, I knock on the door. âYou got a second?â
He lifts those blue-gray eyes, and I donât get the same look of disdain he gave me the last time I was in this office. It would make sense if he did. I represent the only thing heâs ever hated in this world.
âYouâre here late,â he says.
I lift the binder in my hand. âI wanted to talk to you in private and when you werenât swamped.â
He nods as he sits back in his chair.
