CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR

To touch the ground at any point in a fight with a Master earth mage was to sign one’s death warrant. It gave them the ability to strike from all directions. Unlike the air, which was too ephemeral to hide the concentration of magic necessary to harm with it, the earth allowed a Gifted—when beyond a certain level of power and skill—to prepare their attacks unnoticed.

This was what had been repeated again and again in the war journals Dorea had read to learn more about warding. She had had to go look for tidbits of useful information in between recountings of battles and had therefore absorbed some of that knowledge for herself.

Having witnessed firsthand the level of damage that an earth-aspected creature could wreck, even if its opponent never touched down, during the fight between Old Titan and the eagle, Dorea knew it wasn’t a perfect solution. However, it remained the number one recommendation when facing such a mage. Never touch the ground.

This meant that, even though the stone worm had broken her Bulwark with little trouble, Dorea used all her faculties to catch herself and Masi to prevent them from coming into contact with the dirt.

As soon as she had reacquired control over their tumbling forms, she crafted another Bulwark and shot away from the Master mage.

He wants to chase us, and he’ll force our hand if we don’t do it. I don’t know if we can survive this, but defiance at this point seems more foolish than brave.

“Run, little kiddies, run!” the mage screamed gleefully. His construct reared up before throwing itself in pursuit.

It dove into the ground like a sea serpent in the water, disappearing from her senses. Dorea knew, however, that the thing was not gone. It would track them down immediately if the mage willed it, but he apparently enjoyed the thrill of a hunt too much, and she could only hope to make enough of a racket that others would notice.

“We need to get back into patrolled lands, or we’re gonna get killed!” Masi shouted, helplessly looking down to see if he could notice the worm before it could breach the ground.

Dorea set her face into a grim expression. If they managed to meet with another patrol, they’d also get drawn into the fight, and she doubted any of them could do much to the man hunting them. Their only hope of survival at this point was to either give the man what he wanted—meaning a chase—and hope that he’d be satisfied with that or get to Camp to be rescued by Yaomi.

The Witch of Immolation would be more than enough to deal with the earth mage, especially since he operated close to her territory for so long while hiding himself. That told her that he wasn’t confident in facing the Heidel chief.

Still, Dorea seriously doubted he’d allow them to get that far. Even going as fast as she could, it would take them a few hours to be close enough to be sensed by the Witch.
