Chapter Sixteen

Secrets We Keep

Eona tapped her pen vigorously against her lip when working to decipher the data sent by Kira after their espionage in Brazil. She knew little about technology, but her father had her take courses in college that allowed her to have a basic understanding of computer programming and code. Once you understood the basics, you could progress from there and break quite a few low-level security firewalls. Here, however, the information she received was decoded only half-way, and they sent the rest to Eona to finish. Whether pressed for time or resources, the information given to her was littered with broken sentences and mainly lost in translation, save for a few notable names.

The name that alarmed Eona the most was ‘Tepes’.

It was unknown of which Tepes, the partly decoded documents referred to, but the mention of her House name in the same sentence as ‘experiments’ raised flags. Her mother was no longer alive and clearly Eona was not involved in these horrendous acts, leaving only her aunt. Eona did not want to imagine her aunt being involved in human experiments, especially when she had publicly denounced the return of the Nightcore program. Then again, it was difficult for Eona to know or understand Carmilla’s actions, especially in the last year and a half.

As a child, Eona saw her aunt as a hero found in fantasy books. She would listen to her idol tell tales of glorious victories, heroic and virtuous. These tales were glorified and glossed over to be made child-friendly, when in reality the cruel and bloody truth was that what her aunt had done was fight and kill hundreds and even thousands of people in the Council’s pursuit of conquest. Humans and vampires alike were slain by her blade and entire oceans of blood flowed in the dozens of centuries she had acted at both their House and the Council’s executioner.

Growing older, Eona’s idolization turned to admiration of her aunt for taking care of her and the Empire when her mother died. Eona turned a blind eye to many things, preserving Carmilla as her childhood hero, to include her treatment of Kira when she first arrived at the Palace. Eona did not fully understand the war and did not know humans other than being less than vampires. She had never met one until Kira treated her no different than a vampire without understanding the true difference between the two.

Eona changed, and she thought Carmilla had, but maybe she was wrong.

Much to Eona’s surprise, Lily had responded to the immortal’s message about the possibility of meeting. While Kira continued her engagements with Delilah and Adam Cain, it discouraged her to undertake this type of mission. This worried Eona more and more. As she knew little of Delilah outside of rumor and speculation the House of Cain had a notorious reputation. Kira was confident in her abilities, but her friend could not help, but wanted to take her away from all the danger she placed herself in.

A part of her would always love Kira though she may never be returned with those feelings ever again.
