The horizontal plane is one of listening, exploring and communication. Clinically, when ‘stuck’ in this plane, one may literally ‘collapse out of the vertical as if pulled downward toward the horizontal’. (Lewis 1996, p.14). The classic S-shaped curve shown in Figure 2.1may be detected. Furthermore, ‘this posture gives the impression that individuals “can’t” do what needs to be done in order to be proactive and move forward in life’ (p.14). Faced with the progression of dementia, it is not surprising that Mrs. C may indeed feel an inability to move forth in her life.

Processing

Inherent in dance/movement therapy is a time for processing the work that has been carried out. Verbal in nature, this is a time intended to allow what has happened in the session to shift and to settle. During this time, group members receive feedback from peers and the therapist, often resulting in integration of the exploration taking place earlier in the session.
