Be the teen’s advocate.

Think of yourself as the grieving teen’s advocate. Even if you aren’t around him all the time, you can still take steps to ensure that his other environments are supportive and loving.

Sometimes a few simple phone calls is all it takes to alert adults in the teen’s life to his special needs right now.

Consider the following spheres of influence: immediate family, extended family, neighborhood, school, circle of friends, extracurricular activities and church/place of worship.

Don’t abuse the teen’s trust by disclosing information he has asked you to keep private. Let the teen know you’ve talked to these people so he won’t be taken caught off guard when they bring up the subject.
