Just after eleven, Georgia pulled up on the drive outside. She reached into the glove box and one last time wiped her face and hands on a wet tissue. She couldnât do anything about the perfume lingering on her clothes, but the scent of sex? She wasnât that crass.
She rubbed her hands over her face and grinned. It hadnât been a bad night, maybe living in Amberfield wouldnât be such an awful thing after all if she could network some play dates as she had in London.
But then her thoughts turned to Pippa. Nothing like the Jennifer Homertonâs of the world, but just as⦠She put those thoughts away. They were friends, supportive friends, and she wasnât going to fuck it up. Theyâd already had a near miss with that emotive hallway fumble, she wouldnât risk it again just to play.
She climbed from the car and hit the fob to lock it as she walked up the path. Noticing the lamp still on in the living room, she glanced up at the windows elsewhere, all in darkness.
Walking into the house, she found Pippa curled up on the couch under a blanket, the TV on low as she watched a film, she looked up when she heard the soft footsteps.
âHey, all, okay?â Georgia whispered.
âYou do know they canât hear you, right? And even if they could, the likelihood of hearing us chat is minimal once theyâre asleep.â Pippa sat up and checked her watch. âI thought youâd be gone longer.â
Georgia wandered over to the kitchen area and flicked the kettle on, then changed her mind and opened the fridge. âNah, sorted her out and headed home. Robbie wonât be getting any more hassle from that boy.â She took a can of Tango out, pulled a face but opened it anyway, swigging it down straight from the tin.
Pippa nodded and got to her feet. âAnd what about you, will you still be getting hassle from her.â
The way she said her got Georgiaâs attention. And she narrowed her eyes at her friend as she asked, âMaybe.â
The word was a last dagger that cut away any hope in Pippaâs heart. âRight, well, I need to get going, school tomorrow.â
Georgia put the can of drink down and moved across the room to stand in front of her and block the doorway. She took hold of Pippaâs shoulders and pulled her into a hug, which Pippa didnât reciprocate.
âThanks for tonight, I know it wasnât the plan, but Iâll make it up to you.â
âSure, no problem. Iâll see you around,â Pippa responded a little more tersely than sheâd intended. Where was this jealousy coming from? It wasnât like she and Georgia were seeing each other, they were friends, supporting each other through a difficult time over their shared connection, thatâs it. Stop romanticising her.
âYou alright?â Georgia asked before Pippa could escape.
âYeah, Iâm just tired, thatâs all. Iâm glad you had a good night and got everythingâ¦sorted.â
âThanks. Iâll see you in the morning when I drop Cassie off then.
