Chapter 6
Peter awoke to a cold wet nose pressed to the warm skin of his belly. Unless Evan had stuck his nose in a tray of ice-cold water, Hazel had been allowed into the bedroom overnight.
âI canât believe I never wake up,â he murmured as he greeted the dog.
âHuh?â Evan lifted his head and looked at Hazel. âHow did you get in here?â
Hazel thumped her tail at Evan.
âAgain.â
Evan furrowed his brow. âHuh?â
Peter rolled his eyes. âYou do realise that I know you sneak out and get Hazel during the night.â
âI didnât move all night. My arm is still under your head, and pins and needles. Ow hell that hurts!â Evan pulled his arm from under Peterâs head and waved it around like a madman.
Peter rolled over onto his back partly to watch Evanâs antics and partly to avoid being smacked in the face. Hazel crept over and buried herself in the crook of Peterâs arm. âI think youâre frightening the dog,â he pointed out.
Evan stopped for a moment and scratched behind Hazelâs floppy ears. âSorry, girl. Daddyâs got a dead arm. Iâve got to get the blood circulating again.â He got out of bed and rotated his shoulder. âWeâve really got to stop doing this.â
âWe canât have slept in that position all night,â Peter said. âI know you sneak Hazel in.â
âOnce or twice when she was making so much noise it was doing my head in, but normally I sleep through the night.â
If it was an act, it was a very good act. Evan looked completely genuine. âYouâre telling me our three month old puppy has learnt how to open the door? Has she grown three feet and opposable thumbs?â
âHow the hell do I know how she got out of the kitchen? All I do know is that unless one of us has started sleep walking and managed to avoid waking the other one up, Hazel is the one doing the escaping. Hold on.â Evan left the bedroom.
Peter stayed where he was, warm and tucked up next to Hazel, not anxious to move even when he heard Evan exclaim, âCheeky mare.â
âWhat did she do?â
Evan walked back and bounced onto the bed. âDonât you grumble at me, young lady,â he said to Hazel whoâd not appreciated being disturbed. âIâm not the one whoâs learnt to push the door open.â
Peter furrowed his brow. âThe kitchen door?â
âNo, the front door. Yes, the kitchen door.â
âSarcasm is the lowest form of wit.â
Evan flipped him off. âCome on, menace, I want to see you open the door.â He picked her up and left the bedroom again.
âShe wonât do it, you know,â Peter called. He knew he had to get up soon but if Evan didnât want to rush who was he to force the issue?
âYou have no faith in me.â Evan returned without Hazel.
Peter frowned. âWhat have you done with her?â
Evan grinned. âJust wait.â
âWe could be here for hours.â
âWanna bet?â Evan raised an eyebrow. âA fiver sheâs back in bed in ten minutes.â
âYouâre on.â
Evan curled up against Peter.
