CHAPTER ELEVEN
“Well, today is the big day,” Jake said as he waltzed into my room.
“Big day?” I asked.
“Yep. We are moving you to the rehab facility to get you started on the right track to getting better. I came to personally take you.”
His eyes lit up when he smiled. I saw the specks of gold in them that I had missed before. The chocolate color made that more pronounced.
“What are you looking at so intently?”
“Nothing,” I said and dropped my head. I felt the heat race up my neck and swallow my face whole. I wanted the bed to help me disappear, but that wish would never come true.
He gave off a small laugh and I refused to look up. I heard him moving around the small room and as much as I wanted to see what he was doing, I wouldn’t.
“I have a few things to do, then we will get you ready to go.” He turned to leave, and I watched his back until I couldn’t see him anymore.
“Smooth, Hayden.”
It wasn’t like I stood a chance with someone like him anyway. As far as I could remember, I had never dated. I was sure I had crushes, but the way I was with Jake, there was no way I acted on them.
“Why the puzzled look?” Tracy asked.
Lost in my thoughts, I jumped at the sound of her voice. I should have known one of them would be here. The only time they weren’t lately is when it was time to sleep for the night. Most of the time, I didn’t mind them being there, but sometimes, I wanted to be alone. The constant feeling of having to entertain them and be alert was exhausting.
“I was trying to remember something, but no matter how I hard I try, I can’t.”
“What is it? Maybe I can help?”
“I couldn’t remember if I…”
“Alright. We are about set,” Jake said coming back into the room pushing a wheelchair.
“Is that necessary?” Tracy asked.
“Hospital policy. Besides, she hasn’t been up and moving that long. Three floors is a long walk for her right now. Give her a few weeks and it should be cake walk.”
“You’re the boss,” Tracy said and stepped to the side.
I knew she was being nice, but the way she was half flirting with him pissed me off for a second. How could she have known I kind of liked him? I didn’t until today.
“Where is Oscar?” I asked. It hit me that she hadn’t brought him with her.
“I will bring him by later for you. Adam took him to get a good bath while we got you settled into the new place.”
“Okay.”
I smiled even though I was disappointed. It would have made things better if he would have been there. I better get used to having other people tell me what to do and when to do it. I didn’t know how long that would go on for, but I knew I had a long way to go.
“Don’t worry, he will be here soon.
