The letter had been readdressed, in a different hand: Try Bird, Pumping-Station. Janet turned it over twice before opening it, then looked again curiously at the original address. That too was incomplete, in shaky script, as if the person who penned it was old, or ill. The Farm Cottages, The Common. She sat down abruptly at the kitchen table, pushing aside a tray of rusks which were still hot from the oven, causing her to suck her scorched fingertips ruefully.

She had been busy as usual, while waiting for Jim to come in for his early break (his cup of Camp coffee, made with milk, the way he liked it) and was now about to call Grandma Birdie in from the vegetable garden, where she was picking runner beans. They planned to salt these down for winter. The jars were ready: washed and sterilised. They’d string and slice the beans to Housewife’s Choice; they both liked Wee Georgie Elrick, the Scottish presenter.

Her own hands shook, as she tore the envelope open.
