Chapter 15

SAGE

I’ll spare the details.

Nothing much happened. Milo got the knife away from Maria, which I never would’ve thought of in that little amount of time, and then she was defenseless.

She is dead. Selena shot her. There was a microphone strapped to her apron that we broke into pieces before we left, leaving behind no Magics and no proof. We hope.

That experience was a nightmare, but I’d do anything to be back there, in the comfort of a house with beds and sleep and comfort. We’ve started walking again, gallivanting past sideways trees that the harsh wind is blowing (I love Elysian, but she has got to learn how to use her power or she’ll blow us away), and Sorin is yelling. Again.

This time, he’s yelling at me, and not his long-lost sister who is most likely against us but seems nice enough.

“When you kissed me, did that mean nothing to you?” he says.

Sure, he’s not yelling that loudly or else the others would hear, but we’re farther behind and they’re walking fast.

I want to tell him I don’t know. I want to tell him that I have no idea what is happening anymore because everything is upside down and if I had just stayed at Camp Serenity instead of playing the hero, I would’ve been so much happier. And I want to ask him how that kiss could have meant nothing to me when I was the one who initiated it. I want to, I want to, I want to, but I keep quiet, and he gets angrier by the second at my unresponsive grunts, his face turning an unflattering shade of crimson.

“Seriously?” he demands, his tone getting louder and louder. “You’re seriously going to ignore me after all we’ve been through? I am so confused and you’re not helping by just nodding or shaking your head, Sage.”

I’m confused too, Sunshine. You’re not the only one struggling.

“I can’t believe you.”

It takes a moment to realize those words are mine.

“What?” He stops in his tracks. “You can’t believe me?”

I freeze, too. I can’t bring myself to look at him. “No, Sorin, I can’t.” I take a breath before continuing. “You don’t understand how hard this has been for me. It’s taken me forever to figure out what I feel for you, whether it’s just a crush or you’re my enemy or what, but you’re not making this decision any easier. And not to mention the fact that we’re, you know, basically walking to our deaths. This hasn’t been fun, and I do not need this pressure right now, so yes. To answer your question, I can’t believe you.”

He’s silent for a moment. “You’re kidding.”

“No, I’m not.”

“You seriously don’t know if I’m your enemy or not?” There’s hurt in his voice, but I really don’t care. “After everything you’ve done, after everything I’ve done, after everything we’ve done, you still don’t know?”

“Can we not do this right now?” I murmur. I’m honestly slightly embarrassed, and I shouldn’t be. This is his
