Chapter Fifteen

“Time to speed it up.” Beau wielded the shovel with more force. “We’re almost there. Let’s get ’er done.”

“Works for me.” Jess flashed him a smile.

Did she get that he needed some time with his thoughts? If so, he was grateful.

The pig discussion had sobered him in more ways than one. She’d given him a taste of what he’d let himself in for.

She didn’t just want him to stop cracking jokes all the time. She wanted him to talk about his feelings. He hadn’t bargained on that.

He might have to do some fancy footwork to convince her he was good dad material without completely baring his soul. He hadn’t had to bare much of it to confess the pigs were important to him. If that helped her see he’d be a loving father, so much the better.

Big surprise, he and Jess looked at things differently. Getting to know each other could mean one thing to him and something else to her. He was going for the basics — what favorite games she’d played as a kid, what music she’d listened to as a teenager, what movies she’d liked and what kind she liked now.

He’d be happy to share that type of info about himself, but there were a few topics, one in particular, he’d rather not delve into. Maybe that’s why he hadn’t taken her into his room while they’d dated.

Last night had been worth risking it. She’d asked about the dragon kite, like most people would. Well, if she had more questions, he’d answer them without going into detail. Come to think of it, there weren’t any details to go into.

The barn was dead ahead, only a few more shovels full and they’d be done. He’d worked up a sweat during that last stretch. Could be a combination of the physical exertion and the mental gymnastics.

He was so ready to get out of his head. Feeding wouldn’t take long. Nobody would expect them to come straight back. She’d agreed to stay with him and he wanted to… celebrate that fact.

A whinny came from inside the barn. Then another, followed by squeals and grunts.

She chuckled. “It’s Slim and Pickens.”

“Yes, ma’am. We need to get in there. Don’t worry about doing a perfect job. The tractor will be over later in the day to plow the whole yard.”

“Gotcha. The pigs must be close to the front since we can hear them so well.”

“First stall to the right.”

“Do you have food for them?”

“Yes, ma’am. It’s in a couple of plastic bags in the mini-fridge in the tack room, one for each. We’ll feed them first.”

“Of course we will. Did you bring those guys over in the back of your truck?”

“I, um, came up with a different system.”

She grinned at him. “They rode in the cab, didn’t they?”

“It’s really cold in the back of the truck. Slim’s learned to sit in the passenger seat with a harness. Pickens curls up in a bed on the floor. They’re good travelers.”

“You don’t have to explain it to me.
