Chapter Fifteen
âTime to speed it up.â Beau wielded the shovel with more force. âWeâre almost there. Letâs get âer done.â
âWorks for me.â Jess flashed him a smile.
Did she get that he needed some time with his thoughts? If so, he was grateful.
The pig discussion had sobered him in more ways than one. Sheâd given him a taste of what heâd let himself in for.
She didnât just want him to stop cracking jokes all the time. She wanted him to talk about his feelings. He hadnât bargained on that.
He might have to do some fancy footwork to convince her he was good dad material without completely baring his soul. He hadnât had to bare much of it to confess the pigs were important to him. If that helped her see heâd be a loving father, so much the better.
Big surprise, he and Jess looked at things differently. Getting to know each other could mean one thing to him and something else to her. He was going for the basics â what favorite games sheâd played as a kid, what music sheâd listened to as a teenager, what movies sheâd liked and what kind she liked now.
Heâd be happy to share that type of info about himself, but there were a few topics, one in particular, heâd rather not delve into. Maybe thatâs why he hadnât taken her into his room while theyâd dated.
Last night had been worth risking it. Sheâd asked about the dragon kite, like most people would. Well, if she had more questions, heâd answer them without going into detail. Come to think of it, there werenât any details to go into.
The barn was dead ahead, only a few more shovels full and theyâd be done. Heâd worked up a sweat during that last stretch. Could be a combination of the physical exertion and the mental gymnastics.
He was so ready to get out of his head. Feeding wouldnât take long. Nobody would expect them to come straight back. Sheâd agreed to stay with him and he wanted to⦠celebrate that fact.
A whinny came from inside the barn. Then another, followed by squeals and grunts.
She chuckled. âItâs Slim and Pickens.â
âYes, maâam. We need to get in there. Donât worry about doing a perfect job. The tractor will be over later in the day to plow the whole yard.â
âGotcha. The pigs must be close to the front since we can hear them so well.â
âFirst stall to the right.â
âDo you have food for them?â
âYes, maâam. Itâs in a couple of plastic bags in the mini-fridge in the tack room, one for each. Weâll feed them first.â
âOf course we will. Did you bring those guys over in the back of your truck?â
âI, um, came up with a different system.â
She grinned at him. âThey rode in the cab, didnât they?â
âItâs really cold in the back of the truck. Slimâs learned to sit in the passenger seat with a harness. Pickens curls up in a bed on the floor. Theyâre good travelers.â
âYou donât have to explain it to me.
