In the parking lot sat a big armoured vehicle the likes of which Aidan hadn’t seen since before the end. It was dark in colour and had slits for windows. The door was open and three men, armed to the teeth and hands on their guns, stood talking to Ace.
They looked like soldiers, Aidan noted as one of them turned in the direction of the truck and then looked back to Ace. Whatever was going on, Ace’s back was up and the man looked annoyed as hell.
Aidan shut off the truck and hopped out of the vehicle. Net and Scout stepped out of the truck, waiting for Aidan’s word to shoot.
Would Scout remember where to shoot on a man wearing body armour? Could Net pull off such a shot when she had yet to have breakfast?
That was a stupid question, one Net could never know he had asked himself, for his own safety.
“What is going on here?” he asked as he approached the little group. The leader of the group turned towards Aidan and then dismissed him immediately. “Ace?”
“Boss, these guys are laying claim to the land, saying they’re with West Coast Soldiers—”
Boyo flew past Aidan and caught the leader upside the head, knocking his helmet off and clattering it across the ground. The man looked startled for a moment before Boyo rounded and caught him square on the chin with a closed fist.
“That’s for leaving me here for five years, you asshole!” Boyo’s voice cut through the stunned silence as the others of the strange group raised their guns and targeted the young man. The leader straightened and looked at Boyo, stunned, and Boyo reached out and slapped. “You left me here to die!”
“Nick?” the leader asked, sounding shocked as could be, even as one of his men said, “Captain?”
“Oh, oh, so you remember my name, but couldn’t remember to come pick me up?” Boyo asked.
“I thought you were dead. We’re here to reclaim the region and whatever supplies we can get our hands on. Down on the coast, we’re running low, see. So we came.”
“No,” Boyo said with a force that reminded Aidan of Net's pissed off tone.
“Nick, it doesn’t work that way, this is the real world.”
“Fuck you, Patrick, fuck you,” Boyo said, jabbing a finger at the leader and giving him a look of pure rage, the likes of which Aidan had never seen before. “You said you would come back for me and I said I would guard this stuff for the sake of the stores. Not so you and your goddamned patsies—”
“Soldiers,” Patrick said, only to receive a look that made him shift his weight away from Boyo.
“—to steal because you are running low. Guess what, everyone is running low, but this here? This city? Is mine, they say so.” Boyo made a gesture that might have meant Aidan and his group, or might have meant people Boyo thought were there. “This is my land, my territory and I’m the—the what?” Boyo looked around Patrick and to Scout, who was still obediently hovering by the truck.
